About this Cook
Musician, erstwhile free-lance writer, and recovering sheep farmer, living a charmed life with my always-hungry family in beautiful midcoast Maine. Currently holding one of those middle-management day jobs to support the sailboat habit, yarn addiction and grocery bill.
My favorite things to cook
Homemade breads and "comfort food" during cold weather (which is, like, nine months of the year up here); fresh seafood; and anything spicy.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making far too much food for guests, and holiday meals: pork braised in homemade sauerkraut on New Year's Day - a midwestern tradition that was part of the spousal package deal (he makes the sauerkraut; bonus!) - and oyster or lobster stew on Christmas Eve.
My cooking triumphs
Creating Thanksgiving dinner - with all the trimmings and without a single recipe - in my bachelor brother-in-law's bare-bones kitchen one year when a freak snowstorm scuttled our travel plans. Fortunately my nephew had bagged a wild turkey a few days before!
My cooking tragedies
Our 20-year-old stove is acting up. Currently anything that goes in the oven has potential to fall into this category.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople
As the 2,578th reviewer, what can I say? This is a fantastic recipe and eminently tweakable. I use my own favorite crust (the "vodka" recipe from Cooks Illustrated) and toss some cinnamon into the apples. Hooray for Grandma Ople!

Chicken Wings Fricassee
We really like this recipe - have made it several times now, and to address the chicken-broth-or-water dilemma, either works just fine. You can't mess this one up and it's delicious. Thanks!

Texas Spoon Bread
Made this to go with a pot roast and it was delicious with thick beefy gravy!
