I am 62 and have been cooking off and on since I was 9. Because I have been a workaholic most of my life I have not spent the time cooking that I would have liked. I taught my wife to cook when I married at 30 and now we share the kitchen. In the last few years I have slowed down on work and have weekends off so have more time to cook. I cook a lot of double recipes so I can bring leftovers to work. I also brew beer (all grain) and consider myself an expert level at that hobby.
My favorite things to cook
Stews, chili, casseroles & roasts indoors and grilled meats & veggies outdoors. I also like to smoke meats but haven't in a couple of years since my smoker rusted out.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The family pot luck at my brothers house with my mother's famous wild current cobbler as my favorite desert. My brother cooks the turkey and dressing. I bring the cornbread salad and cranberry sauce.
My cooking triumphs
Too many to name but my latest was King Ranch Chicken that my wife said was the best she had ever eaten and as a Texas girl, that is high praise.
My cooking tragedies
Boiled Crow. I was 9 years old. My mother and father were away for a few hours and I went out into the back yard with the 22 rifle and shot a crow. I dressed it and put it in a pot of water on the wood stove and boiled it without any seasonings. It was truly horrible - tough, gamey and stringy - but I ate the whole thing in sandwich form. My parents were not amused.
