Fall ruminations

The first freeze of the season withered the leaves of all the summer garden's veggies last night. I'm not too sad about it because our fall garden's thriving and, frankly, I'm sick of picking beans, okra and tomatoes. Time to move on...I'm ready for cool/cold weather (you can take the girl out of Alaska, but not the Alaska out of the girl), brilliant gold, red and orange leaves, the gentle melancholy of fall, my favorite season. I'm ready to bake, bake, bake, and walk, walk, walk off all those extra cake-cookie-bread calories. I look forward to warm, steamy afternoons in the kitchen, cooking big pots of fall vegetable soup, hearty casseroles, and sinful desserts, and sharing the results with friends and family.

As I write, my eye rests on the periwinkle and purples of the butterfly bush flowers and lavender stems I picked yesterday and put in a vase on the kitchen table -- summer's last shout-out. A swarm of gnats does its manic dance just outside the door. Not too many performances left for those little critters. Tonight, the north wind will be blowing down on the high desert and bringing more freezing temps. I love the eerie howl of the wind as it sneaks its way in through the cracks of this cattywampus old house. I'll be staying warm in the kitchen, cup of tea at hand, donning my favorite apron and stirring the garden's last zucchini into a batter for sweet bread.

Would love to hear others' autumn reflections, thoughts, and kitchen stories.

Now I feel all warm and cozy. You paint beautifully with words! To me, autumn means the smell of clean straw in the barn, cold crisp air in your face when you are riding out on the range, and the smell of apples cookin.

I'm not sure where you live, but I would sure love to be there. Fall is also my favorite season, I love the smell of a crisp fall afternoon. I am in Northern California and I believe we hit a high of 96 today. OH BROTHER!!

Fall is my favorite season also. I live in Texas and normally it doesn't arrive until Halloween but this morning I woke up and needed a jacket. How wonderful!

About Me
I come from a family of incredible cooks. My grandma cooked professionally all of her life. My mom and her four sisters have the gift, too. I'm a self-employed landscaper who hopes one day soon to turn my love of cooking into a professional enterprise.
My favorite things to cook
I love "ethnic" cuisine, especially Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Indian. I enjoy making hearty roasts and soups in the winter and using my organic, homegrown veggies in the summer in all kinds of dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making Christmas cookies with my daughter.
My cooking triumphs
Making a picture-perfect Buche de Noel, Christmas 1998; catering the desserts for a downtown jazz/coffee night -- it was a success, and all the desserts were vegan.
My cooking tragedies
Meatloaf...I can't seem to make a decent one. Now, that's a tragedy!
