The first freeze of the season withered the leaves of all the summer garden's veggies last night. I'm not too sad about it because our fall garden's thriving and, frankly, I'm sick of picking beans, okra and tomatoes. Time to move on...I'm ready for cool/cold weather (you can take the girl out… MORE

The house smells incredible this morning: I'm roasting more tomatoes from the garden. I found a recipe in Relish Magazine a few days ago: Core and slice a variety of tomatoes, place on parchment-lined baking sheets, drizzle with olive oil, add lots of sliced garlic, coarse sea salt and freshly… MORE

We planted our fall garden a week ago. Keeping it simple and more manageable than our still overflowing spring/summer crop. We put in beets, carrots, Swiss chard, radishes, leaf lettuce, cilantro, arugula and chives. The leafy stuff and radishes sprouted in just a few days. We have abundant… MORE

We have a huge garden this year as we now live in the country and have plenty of space to grow enough veggies to feed an small army, or sell at the farmer's market. The latter I plan to do later in the season. No armies to feed, but plenty of grasshoppers to fend off. I've been trying green… MORE

I'm jazzed. I've been given the opportunity to feature my food at a local business event on April 26. In an effort to drum up more business and draw more potential customers to the "old town" business area here, our downtown association is throwing a spring-fling wing-ding. Each participating… MORE

I named this blog "Welcome to My Kitschen" because I love weird, kitschy stuff that involves food. Sad to admit, but I love fake food -- and I'm not talking McDonald's or boxes of highly processed junk masquerading as food. I collect fake food, you know, like the plastic steak you  might… MORE

Slump

I've been in a cooking slump the past few weeks, which is scary because I'm passionate about cooking. Guess it's a little like writing -- I used to be a professional journalist -- you're going to hit a dry spell from time to time. It's gray February, I just turned 47, I'm not doing what I… MORE

About Me
I come from a family of incredible cooks. My grandma cooked professionally all of her life. My mom and her four sisters have the gift, too. I'm a self-employed landscaper who hopes one day soon to turn my love of cooking into a professional enterprise.
My favorite things to cook
I love "ethnic" cuisine, especially Thai, Greek, Vietnamese, Indian. I enjoy making hearty roasts and soups in the winter and using my organic, homegrown veggies in the summer in all kinds of dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making Christmas cookies with my daughter.
My cooking triumphs
Making a picture-perfect Buche de Noel, Christmas 1998; catering the desserts for a downtown jazz/coffee night -- it was a success, and all the desserts were vegan.
My cooking tragedies
Meatloaf...I can't seem to make a decent one. Now, that's a tragedy!
