Hello all! My name is actually Deborah. Momma Louise is in memory of my dear mother who is now in heaven. I owe everything I know about cooking, to her. My grandmother, who is now 93, still teaches me to this day, God bless her. I love all types of foods. Cooking for other people is what makes me happiest. When I am not cooking, I am taking care of my horses or giving riding lessons. I guess farm living and cooking go hand in hand!
My favorite things to cook
My favorite dishes to cook are anything with pasta, meat and some type of sauce! The more fattening, the better! It doesn't taste good if its good for you. Isn't that what people say?
My favorite family cooking traditions
I cherished Sundays growing up. We would go to Grandma Roses' house early in the morning and make homemade pasta. Gnocchi was my absolute favorite, made with ricotta. They come out softer. We would then make a big pot of homemade sauce and meatballs while the pasta dried. After 4 or 5 hours, we finally sat down to eat the wonderful food and enjoy each others company. Todays families aren't like that anymore. So sad. But I try to pass on these traditions to all the young people I know and they all call me for cooking advice. I love it.
My cooking triumphs
I absolutely hate raw, steamed, stewed, or any type of tomato in chunk form. But my mother insisted on teaching me to can tomatoes, saying they make the best sauce. Well, while married, on my own, I decided to try this for myself.
After hours of peeling, coring and stuffing tomatoes in quart jars, I felt like I really accomplished something. Although it took awhile for the skin on my fingers to unwrinkle! I ended up with 36 quarts of tomatoes, and that year I made the best pasta sauce ever! My mother was so proud of me. Growing up in an Italian family, this all is a must!
My cooking tragedies
The worst thing that has ever happened to my food prep that I can remember is learning how to master the perfect meatball. Oh my! Not too much egg, not too much breadcrumbs, don't forget the garlic and romano cheese, and don't handle the meat too much. Well, the first attempt at this ended up in having a very hearty meat sauce, with dinner guests arriving!! All my meatballs fell apart in the sauce. I was so embarrassed, but we all laughed it off and made the best of it.
