These are really good. I used chocolate almond bark instead of the chocolate chipe and shortening. the almond bark gives them a more mild flavor and gives it a little more solid chocolate coating.

I only made 1/2 a recipe because I only made 8 dogs (I still had enough batter left over to make at least one maybe 2 more). Here is what I did for preparation. I set the hot dogs out about 30 minutes early and dried them off. I lightly coated them with flour and then dipped them. I also had made the dipping batter about 1 hour in advance to have it good and cold so that it did not run so freely. I used my deep fryer and left it set on 400 degrees. They had to cook about 4 minutes with me constantly flipping and holding them in position in order to brown them evenly. They came out great. The batter stuck nicely and the flavor was good. I froze one of them just to see how it would turn out. Frozen, they were much like the ones you buy in the store. I microwaved it so it was not crispy, but a toaster oven would have crisped it up nicely. I would probably also add a little extra sugar because I like mine a little sweeter, but everyone else who ate them said they were fine. Honey might also be good in replacement of half of the sugar. They were great though and much cheaper than the store bought ones. I will definitely make them again.

I was not impressed with this bread. It was very dry and did not have much flavor. I have never made or eaten soda bread before so I am not a good judge as to what it should taste like.
