I'm not by any means a perfectionist. I usually don't measure anything when I cook, unless it's baking. I often come up with recipe ideas off the top of my head, and since I don't write anything down, I forget how to make half of the things I cook when I want to make them again.
My favorite things to cook
I love mexican food, especially enchiladas. I also love most italian foods and can make a really good homemade marinara that turns out a little different each time...since I don't measure anything. I love southern food, like fried chicken and country fried steak with mashed potatoes. I am the gravy queen. I can make it out of anything. I also add bacon grease to almost any vegetable I cook. I'm just a country girl...what can I say.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My whole family loves to cook. My dad makes fantastic pizza. He makes his sauce and dough from scratch. My brother makes delicious ribs and corn beef with cabbage. My mom makes terrific swiss steak and homemade fried chicken. I learned a lot from them. Growing up with a family full of chefs in a small kitchen was fun...but then sometimes aggravating and messy. :)
My cooking triumphs
I have perfected gravy. I can make it from drippings from almost anything you give me, but my favorite is making it from the drippings of oven roasted chicken. My dad loves and requests for me to make potato salad anytime there is a BBQ. I got the basic recipe from my mom and tweaked it to my liking. My dad once had a girlfriend that came knocking at my door at 8 in the morning to request some of the leftover potato salad that I had made for a party the day before.
My cooking tragedies
I burn anything you give me that is supposed to be easy to prepare...such as canned biscuits or cookies that come in a roll. I almost always burn dinner rolls, simply because I forget about them.
