About this Cook
A 30-something mom of three, I'm currently up to my eyeballs in church activities, homeschooling, and cub scouts. Prior to having children I was a Jr. High science and math teacher - which will explain my reviews.
My favorite things to cook
I love making American style breads. They require very little hands-on time, pack a nutritional wallop, and make the house smell terrific. My cooking is all about technique. I highly recommend Pam Anderson's "How to Cook Without A Book" for any cook who's still tied to a recipe book every night. I also love creating soups and stews with seasonal ingredients. My absolute favorite recipe in the world? Church Supper Chicken from the King Arthur cookbook.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Our family has homemade doughnuts, popcorn, apples, and "real" hot chocolate for supper the first night there's still snow on the ground at suppertime. We eat by the light of a milk glass kerosene lamp handed down to my husband by his grandmother.
My cooking triumphs
I've catered 4 weddings now. The most difficult, and rewarding, was a wedding I catered at Musterfield Farm in early October. We served stew out of hollowed out pumpkins along with cinnamon bread sticks, and a buffet of the usual canapes, crudites, and cookies. It probably would have been a little easier if I hadn't been 7 months pregnant at the time!
My cooking tragedies
Where to start? The cookies with a cup of salt that I made when I was nine and brought to a neighbor without tasting them? The first birthday cake I made my boyfriend (now my husband) at 14 that would NOT come out of the pan? Or maybe my first Easter dinner after I was married when I cooked a fully cooked ham at 400 for 4 hours while I was at church and came home to a ham briquette? I love trying new recipes, and have made some real lullapalosers over the years. Tomorrow is another day!

Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread
A very tender, flavorful Irish Soda bread. I especially liked the extra touch of basting with buttermilk/butter during cooking, which created an amazing crust. This will definitely go onto my regular rotation of biscuits and muffins.

Sourdough Bread I
I made this recipe years ago using the potato flake starter and it was soft, slightly tangy/slightly sweet sourdough bread. I made it again yesterday into today using King Arthur Flour sourdough starter and it was so aggresively sour my dog won't eat it! If you are making this bread for the first time, use her starter recipe, too. Even the "wicked bad" loaf rose well and had great texture. This is a keeper recipe as long as your sourdough isn't an agressive breed :-) If you have a more agressive starter, edit the recipe to include 1 packet of yeast, and cut the rising time to 90 minutes instead of overnight.

Sweet Restaurant Slaw
This is just "perfect" slaw -- sweet and creamy with a little tang. I wilted the slaw mix first so I didn't have a puddle in the bottom of the bowl. To wilt, place slaw in colander, and mix with 2 tsp salt. Let stand 2-4 hours until it releases most of its water. It will look horrible -- almost like cooked cabbage. Rinse well, spin, and pat dry. Continue with recipe as written.
