I'm Canadian. My Detroit friends make fun of my accent and my spelling. They do not make fun of my cooking. :)
My favorite things to cook
Indian food. Sauces that take more than 2 hours. Pecan Pie. Beef Bourginion. Bread. Strawberry jam with whole berries in it. Meatballs. Ice cream. Anything with Blue cheese in it. Crushing up my own spice mixes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom isn't much of a cook so as soon as I was in highschool, I sort of took over dinner duty. It was nice having dinner that didn't come out of a box...I think everybody was grateful for that. My nana is one heck of a good cook so I learned from her. I still can't make butter tarts that come even close to hers...she laughs at me whenever I try. I think I will always suck at making pie crust. But I can make a mean roast beef with yorkshire pudding and that is all thanks to my nana.
My cooking triumphs
Even though I am one of the whitest people on the planet, I feel like any lover of Indian food would be fooled that my Dahl and butter chicken wasn't made by an Indian grandma.
My cooking tragedies
For some odd reason, until this past year, I have never been able to make chocolate chip cookies. I don't know why, they just never turned out. I can cook and bake pretty much anything else with relative success but the chocolate chip cookies? Not a chance. I tried every recipe I could get my hands on...I even bought new cookie sheets, all to no avail. And finally, one day...I got it. Perfectly browned, slightly gooey, yummy, yummy chocolate chip cookies. You know what did it? I'm almost embarrased to say....the recipe on the back of the Tollhouse chocolate chips package. Yup, far and away the best recipe and the only one that you can't screw up.
