I am a military brat. I was born and raised in Korea. My father is a second-generation Italian-American who joined the Army, and then fell in love with my mother while he was stationed in Korea. Growing up, I had the best of both worlds: I could always choose what I wanted for dinner. I could either have Italian or Korean food! (I always opted for the latter.)
I have always had a keen interest in cooking, and everyone tells me I just have a natural ability to taste and then re-create. (Although, I will admit that I can't really bake anything!) ^_^ Odd, because most of what I know about Italian food, I learned from my Korean mother who learned from my father's mother. Most of what I know about Korean food has been self-taught or learned from Korean cookbooks.
My favorite things to cook
Anything that has lots of vegetables! I love to experiment and make different types of soups.
Trying to make Korean food more accessible to Korean-Americans and for us Asian food lovers is a priority. I can never find a good website that utilizes vegetables that are uncommon to some Asian foods. I enjoy taking pretty common food items and giving it a different flare. Luckily, my boyfriend has always been a willing companion in all the tastings!
My cooking triumphs
Since we live far away from relatives, I thought it would be nice to surprise my mom with seaweed soup. (Seaweed soup is traditional in Korean society to be eaten on birthdays). I prepared the soup, with no meat, (just like she likes it) and made several of her favorite side dishes. She was surprised and very happy!
My cooking tragedies
Orange-Zest Chicken breast...that's all I have to say about that.
