I have tried my hand at cooking a few times a year for the past 10 years, but really have started to increase the frequency that I cook now that I am newly married. My husband doesn't expect me to cook for him, of course, but I get a great sense of accomplishment whenever I cook up something tasty. I cook approximately 2 meals per week - we end up having leftovers galore if I cook more than that! I will occasionally whip up something sweet to eat, but I do so sparingly because I'm too tempted to eat everything I bake!
My favorite things to cook
Italian pasta dishes! For some reason, I find that pasta recipes are simpler than other dishes and I'm drawn to those recipes whenever I'm on AllRecipes.com. I also love meals that I can throw in a casserole dish and bake in the oven - so easy! My husband is a picky eater and loves practically all things gooey and cheesy, but very few things green and good-for-you, so I'm constantly looking for a good blend between our tastes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Green bean casserole. I look for variations on the recipe every year, and last year hit a home run with a recipe that called for adding Velveeta to the mixture. Wow. I would love to get more into baking cakes and pies - I have a new Kitchen Aid mixer that is dying to be used!
My cooking triumphs
December 2008: I cooked a successful & yummy Thanksgiving dinner for my in-laws (6 people)! Also, my stuffed jalapenos have become quite famous and I am now asked to bring them to family/friend functions!
Any time my husband or family loves what I cook. I need positive reinforcement to keep on cooking!
My cooking tragedies
A few years ago, I cooked a chicken dish that required me to cook the chicken in oil in a skillet. My entire apartment filled with smoke and the fire alarm went off. I am scarred for life and generally stay away from recipes similar to that one. :(
