Tangy Slow Cooker Pork Roast

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2009
Was it tangy? Yes. Did the meat fall apart? Definitely. Would I make it again? No. I followed the recipe exactly. The meat was certainly edible, but all we could taste was vinegar and sugar. The sauce was watery and pungent. We slathered barbecue sauce over the meat to make it taste better. With all the positive reviews, I thought it would be better. My bad.

Awesome Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2009
Great recipe. 4 stars only because the gravy was thin (added flour at the end). I also added a quartered onion and sliced celery at the beginning and some baby carrots for the last hour of cooking. Will make again.

Gourmet Mushroom Risotto

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2008
First time making risotto. Great results, but a lot of work. May opt for a baked pilaf instead; similar flavor, less work. Also, save money on the portabellas and just use white mushrooms.

Zucchini Brownies

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2007
I was skeptical when a friend suggested the recipe, but the end result was fantastic! They are chewy and fudgy - everything you want from a brownie and more (less calories, get to use up garden zucchini)! I omitted the walnuts and added peanut butter morsels.

Homemade Vanilla Pudding

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2007
I altered the recipe a bit, but my main complaint is that it was too sweet to eat (and I like sweets). I did not change the amount of sugar, but would cut it in half if I made this again. I did use only 2 Tbls. cornstarch, but added 1 egg yolk for thickening, richness, and color. I also added 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. The flavor and consistency was great, just way too sweet.

Chocolate Ganache Icing

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2006
This was good. I used it to ice a dark chocolate cake. I used Kahlua instead of brandy. The directions are easier than a "gourmet" recipe, but it did the job. Maybe a little too bitter for me...

Best Ever Caramel Apple Crisp

Reviewed: Sep. 28, 2006
I may not make it again, but it was good. Our "large apples" must have been bigger than the author's, because we had to use a 13"x9"x2" pan. There was no "Crisp" because of the caramel (we used a tub of fat-free caramel apple dip). If I made it again, I'd add more spice (apple pie spice) to the apples and layer the caramel below the crisp. I would use the caramel apple dip again, though. Oh, and the tip to line the pan with foil to avoid a messy clean-up is a good one!

Chicken Tikka Masala

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2006
We are making this for the fourth time, so needless to say, it's a great recipe with some small changes. As per others' suggestions, we almost doubled the tomato. We also reduced the ginger.

Pork Sausage and Cabbage Pitas

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2006
My whole family loved this! 4 stars because I personally think it needed tweeking: I used a 1 lb. tube of regular Jimmy Dean sausage, then 1 small head of cabbage, 2 small onions, and instead of the sugar, red pepper, and salt, I used seasoned salt to taste. I ended up using 1/2 cup sour cream. We will make again.

Sugar Cream Pie I

Reviewed: May 6, 2006
My husband made this for me and we both loved it, though I though it was a bit too sweet. Next time, we'll add only 2/3 cup sugar. We didnt have half-and-half cream, so we used half heavy cream and half milk (which is what half-and-half is anyway). I'd eat the filling as a pudding by itself if I could! As for the 1-star rating below, if you cook a mixture with corn starch too long or over too high heat, the thickening agents will no longer work.

Pork Tenderloin with Dijon Marsala Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2005
We made this for Christmas dinner and were a bit disappointed. We had to triple the recipe for a crowd, so the ingredients got a bit pricy for a mediocre result. We added the "baby bellas" (which are actually crimino mushrooms) and a bit of garlic, as well as kosher salt and pepper. The sauce took a long time to reduce (partially due to tripling the recipe). The end result was pretty bland and a bit too sweet. All in all, not worth it.

Down-South Style Green Beans

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2005
This recipe is a great idea, but the cook time is too long, the seasonings need to be increased due to being diluted by the water, and there is no mention of using the meat from the ham hocks in the finished dish. I made the recipe as it is stated, then had to make adjustments to make it taste like something other than greasy canned green beans.

Crawfish Etouffee

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2005
I've made this twice and loved it both times. The first time, I made it exactly as the recipe states. The second, I used chicken broth instead of the water and Cajun seasoning instead of the seasonings and hot sauce (simplified and improved). Liked it better with my alterations, but tastes great the way it is, too.

Waffles I

The recipe was easy and used ingredients I had on hand. My husband liked the waffles a lot (I didn't have any, I just made them). The only thing I didn't like compared to my own recipe was that they were a bit thin.

Rhubarb Cake II

Reviewed: Jul. 21, 2004
This was very easy but I thought it was sickening sweet. Next time, I'll reduce the sugar. I also didn't care much for the cake mix powder that was left on the top, but that's a dump cake for 'ya!

Banana Oat Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2004
There's no better word for me to describe these than "boring". I even added cinnamon, nutmeg, and almond extract to the mix and I still think they are pretty hard to choke down. Though, they have a nice rounded top, despite what other reviews stated. I got 12 regular muffins and 10 mini muffins from the batter.

Easy and delicious! I substituted a tropical fruit mix for the fruit cocktail and forgot to add the bananas (was waiting until right before I served it to do so and it slipped my mind). Very good.

Quick Pickled Eggs and Beets

The recipe was very easy. I don't like pickled eggs, but I made them for my husband who thought they were pretty good. I agree that they need to refrigerate for a couple of days for the color to set in more.

Creamy Rice Pudding

My husband was craving rice pudding and this recipe hit the spot. He loved it! I used regular raisins and cooked them with the rice so they'd be plump and juicy. This was also very easy to make.

Broccoli and Cauliflower Casserole

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2004
This recipe was wonderful! It was great the first night, and for left-overs. I made a few changes, though. I used brown rice. I steamed the broccoli and cauliflower. As per previous reviews of runny sauce, I used only 1/4 cup butter and 3/4 pound processed cheese food, and 1/2 cup (4 oz.) milk. I only had cream of chicken soup with herbs. I didn't have crackers, but figured they'd be soggy for left-overs anyway. Again, this recipe is a keeper!!!
