About this Cook
I wonder why they don't have blacksmithing and boatbuilding listed as choices under 'hobbies.'
My favorite things to cook
Breads and Pies,Soups and Stews. American traditional foods, but stir-fried. Simple, hearty, tasty, and fast.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother was an Irish Canadian who grew up in an era prior to refrigeration. Consequently, all meat was VERY well done, and all vegetables were boiled to smithereens, but Oh Lord, how she could bake. And she could serve a dozen unexpected guests in twenty minutes or less.
My cooking triumphs
Jalapeno and onion whole wheat bread. I make one heck of a chili. Both are gaining some renown. The folks at my work like my double chocolate chip microwave bundt cake - fast and easy. A triumph was convincing traditionalists that you COULD actually bake in a microwave, if you knew what you were doing.
My cooking tragedies
10 consecutive loaves that blew out and collapsed in the oven.

Pretty Peach Soup
Using this recipe as the starting point, we substituted canned peaches with light syrup and left out the nectar. We took it to a soup/bread/salad party for 8 couples, and it got rave reviews. Served cold, it was very good. Heated in a microwave before putting the raspberry syrup on, it was more flavorful. I'm going to try it without taking the seeds out of the raspberries, AND another by making a separate sauce of jalapenos for the topping. One of the fellows at the party tried a green jalapeno pepper sauce instead of the raspberry, and it was great either hot or cold.
