Hi there! My name is Sheila and I am the fairly new bride of a sweet guy named Joel. I am getting used to living in MS and still missing my family in VA but life is good and my God is bigger than any problems I've run up against. Oh! and I have a super dog named Wilma and I am going to be an aunt for the first time in February.
My favorite things to cook
I love to do things on the grill on summer evenings. (Well to be truthful, I get the stuff ready and Joel does the actual grilling) He loves mac'n'cheese on the stovetop almost as much as he loves me so I love to make it for him. I am trying to get him converted to a baked version but he still prefers the other. I also like to make chicken fajitas, taco soup, cornbread and salads. My sister-in-law and I canned 78 quarts of pears this summer so I am having fun with the ingredient search feature in finding creative ways to fix them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Hmmm...My dad has his tried and true few which include a wonderful Pimento Cheese Spread, the best oyster stew ever, and last but certainly not the least was his famous mashed potatoes and sausage gravy. If mom was late getting home from a shopping he would make us 'taters 'n gravy for supper, alas for my poor mom he used a lot if different pots and pans and left those for her to wash. Mom is a wonderful cook and I can't really pick out a specific dish that was a specialty. If I call her with a question or to bemoan a disaster she tells me that when she got married everyone brought cake mixes to her bridal shower as a joke because she was such a bad cook, so there is still hope for me. :-)
My cooking triumphs
I guess I would have to say soups and stews, I enjoy making them, Joel enjoys eating them, and they usually turn out fine.
My cooking tragedies
I guess my biggest trial WAS my lack of variety in my recipe collection. I am legally blind and the only recipe book I had was one on my computer and the ones that my sisters and mom were sweet enough to email to me. However that is no longer a problem since we just got DSL and I have allrecipes.com to peruse!!! I do hate to fry things however and I also have trouble when the cooking time listed on a recipe says something like "bake until crust is golden brown..."lol
