Cake Mix Cookies IV

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2009
These are blissfully simple, and the flavor options are only limited by your imagination. Tons of different cake mix flavors out there, tons of yummies to add - I used milk chocolate cake mix and added Kraft caramel bits. Good flavor combo - however, the caramels hardened back up once the cookies cooled so if you're looking to try caramel, you might find softer caramel pieces or another option altogether. The cookies themselves were perfect, though - I chilled the dough for a few min. before rolling it into balls; also found if I made them too big they just a tad too gooey in the middle - and I love soft, almost gooey cookies! Can't wait to try all the other flavor possibilities ... this is an EXCELLENT, simple cookie recipe! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Baked Potato Soup I

Reviewed: Jan. 11, 2009
This potato soup is fantastic, and pretty easy to make (hubby's exact words: "this stuff is da bomb!")- sour cream gives it a special flavor and creaminess, and since we didn't have any leftover baked potatoes, I cooked some quick in the microwave in one of those cloth "baked potato bags" - which cut way down on the prep time. Even better the second day, and a wonderful treat for those of us freezing our butts off up here in Iowa. :-)

Rich and Simple French Onion Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2008
This was easy to make, and delicious too! Once all the flavors had a chance to mingle, it really came together. I wasn't able to use my broiler, but when I put the (oven-safe) soup bowl in the oven with French bread and two kinds of cheese on top to melt, it came out looking just like the stuff I had at a restaurant a week before ... and tasted even better, because I knew everything that was in it. Didn't have any sherry, so I left it out... never even missed it. Great comfort food on a chilly evening!

Frosty Orange Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2008
I made this the night before our July 4th BBQ; we had a bunch of people coming over to celebrate. This pie was SUPER EASY to whip together in a flash - and came out smooth, creamy and tasty. Guests said it reminded them of orange sherbet. I agree that the filling should mound out of the crust, but I still wound up discarding a little bit of it just because it was my preference to not have a super-huge pie. This is a great addition to your summer-afternoon recipe collection. Would be great to try w/other flavors too (strawberry's my next choice). Thanks for sharing!! :)

Mini Tacos

These were really cute, and pretty good. I would take a previous user's suggestion and try it w/"scoop" tortilla chips, because the wonton wrappers worked well, but were a little lacking in flavor.

This could not have been simpler, and tasty as well. It also freezes well for sandwiches later down the road.

Bar Stool Pretzels

Reviewed: May 24, 2008
These are great and super-easy! I used small (not sourdough) pretzel rods just like in Late2Class' photo, decreased butter to 3/4 cup, shook the whole mixture in a large baggie, started oven temp off at 200 and gradually increased to 250 avoid burning. Salty? ...well, yeah - it's a bar snack. Excellent w/the frosty adult beverage of your choice. Thanks for sharing!

Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff I

Reviewed: May 22, 2008
This stuff was great - a nice change from the 'norm' stroganoff...either a)the stuff made w/crm of mushroom soup & ground beef, or b)the Hamburger Helper variety. Followed jillybean's suggestions, and had great results.

Make-Ahead Sandwiches

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2008
I love the idea behind these (make-ahead) sandwiches. Easy to make, filling, and the kids loved 'em. If you like things a little spicy, try using Italian sausage instead of ground beef; we couldn't really notice the pepper sauce, and the flavor almost seemed to be 'missing' something...but was still good. You could play around w/the ingredients in this quite a bit and not really do any damage. After freezing the sandwiches for a week, we reheated them as directed, and they were still pretty good. Buns (although wrinkly-looking) were slightly crunchy on the outside, inside sandwich was soft and warm. Flavor improved the 2nd time; the taste of pickle and onion really helps. These are great for a quick bite or if you just want to throw something in the oven (2nd time around); a nice addition to your "freeze ahead of time" menu list. Thanks for sharing :)

Strawberry Vinaigrette

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2008
I too found this to be a little thick for a vinaigrette. The taste was too creamy for what I was expecting - it had a kind of richness or fullness that I can't describe as other than 'buttery' in flavor or smell...that may not be the correct word. It was almost kinda like a strawberry smoothie with olive oil in it. Bummer, because I was really hoping this would work, too! Hope future reviewers find success w/this one

Buffalo Style Chicken Pizza

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2008
I feel really bad, but I have to give this only 2 stars because it really didn't go over very well at our house. There are so many great reviews, I would recommend at least trying this recipe if you're interested in it ... but be sure to use good, quality ingredients (we're on a budget so I'm forever buying store-brand stuff!). Specifically, don't skimp on the quality of hot sauce or the blue cheese dressing, as the flavor will suffer a bit - and if you know you've got a good homemade pizza crust recipe, then use it... but I would otherwise stick to the pre-made crust. Also, if you favor traditional pizza flavors (tomato-based sauce with cheese and toppings) and don't like to stray from the norm, then the flavors in this pizza may not be to your liking. We as a family love wings, but aren't used to different styles of pizza, so this recipe just didn't quite work. I think it's just a matter of preference, and unfortunately not every recipe will work for every family, all of the time. Good luck to future users/reviewers, I'm sure many of you will continue to find success w/this recipe. :)

Cheesy Ham and Hash Brown Casserole

Reviewed: Mar. 4, 2008
I'd planned on making this recipe a month ago, but kept putting it off for no reason. Tonight, I was in a HUGE hurry to make dinner. All ingredients were on hand, so I literally threw them together in a bowl, tossed 'em into a prepared casserole dish, threw it in the oven and told my family when the timer went off in an hour, it would be ready. I came home to rave reviews from the kids (oldest daughter declared it to be "OMG good") so I tried it myself. Very yummy! Very easy to make, and as soon as I'm done typing this review, I'm going to go back upstairs and have another bowl. Next time I'll probably mix together the wet ingredients first just so it's easier to distribute evenly throughout, but this was good stuff no matter what.

Soft Chocolate Cookies

These were easy to make; I had all ingredients on hand. Batter was pretty sticky, but I dropped by spoonfuls onto parchment paper-lined cookie sheet and they were fine. Very soft cookie, almost cake-like. Best to wait until they're completely cooled to eat them.

Salsa Chicken

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2008
This was excellent! Made exactly as written, it was quick, easy, and tasty. Taco seasoning is what gives it that "something" - this would be great w/rice and salad, a tasty but not too heavy meal. Thanks so much!

Chocolate Frosting I

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2008
When made as directed, this was a bit too sugary-tasting for our preference. Adjusted to add less sugar and more cocoa per previous reviews, plus a touch more margarine for richer flavor. Adjusted taste was very yummy, but consistency was not thick enough like store-bought frosting. Not sure what it's missing ... this would be an excellent drizzle-type frosting, it was fantastic when it soaked into the cake - but not quite 5 stars for what we were expecting. Again, I think it's just a matter of personal preference.

Coconut Shrimp I

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2008
Would give this 4.5 stars if I could...this turned out surprisingly well considering we don't fry very much around our house! A bit time-consuming (we had a bag of about 60 shrimp), but the results were very tasty - my husband, who is not a fan of seafood, liked them very much. Definitely would recommend the orange marmalade sauce suggested by another user. Be careful not to eat too many shrimp, especially if you're drinking the beer leftover after making the batter! haha

Dirt Cake I

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2008
Made this for a quadruple-family-member birthday-party this weekend (four people, four different cakes). Had one box vanilla, one box chocolate pudding; mixed them together and they were great. Added contents to a plastic sand bucket, covered the crushed cookie top w/gummy worms & bugs, and it was a HUGE hit! Very, very yummy - I was ordered to bring dirt cake to all family functions from now on, or don't even bother showing up. haha :)

Chicken Pot Pie IX

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2008
I've made this twice now, and it was fantastic both times - VERY well received by the family! Made the recipe once as written, and once w/a bag of frozen mixed veggies because I didn't have carrots or celery on hand. Definitely recommend name-brand pie crusts - don't skimp there, you will appreciate the difference! An absolute keeper. Thank you! :)

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2008
Some of the most awesome recipes can be classified as such because they turn out flippin' excellent even though you know you made a mistake. File this recipe under that category!! I doubled up the recipe to have extra on hand to freeze, got ahead of myself and started throwing stuff together w/o measuring (mainly speaking, too much water - the consistency wasn't as creamy as I was looking for, but I must repeat that was MY OWN fault!) I did stick to the ingredient list and also added shredded cheese. Very satisfying on a cold winter's night, and even better the 2nd and 3rd day! I will try measuring things out next time; I'm pretty confident it will be even better.
