About this Cook
Very happily married w/three kids. When I first moved out on my own, I couldn't cook worth a darn - my specialties were toast and cereal, with a tendency to burn the toast. An ex-boyfriend used to give me a really hard time because I was so lousy in the kitchen; fortunately, he knew how to cook. The best thing that came out of our relationship was his cooking advice.
My favorite things to cook
Pasta dishes, also love to grill steak (what better place to get great steak than the Midwest!), and anything smothered in cheese. I've found lots of 'new' fave recipes on this website! I very highly recommend you give the following recipes a try: Chicken Pot Pie IX, Baked Ziti I, and Dirt Cake I, for starters. (apparently I'm attracted to recipes that end in Roman numerals...go figure!)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Baking loads of treats at Christmas time, also having everyone in my husband's family contribute dishes to holiday feasts throughout the year. It's fun to see what everyone else brings.
My cooking triumphs
In addition to the three recipes I listed above in 'fave things to cook', also green chili pork loin stew, and all kinds of baked goodies. I'm learning not to freak out if things don't go exactly as planned when cooking something; sometimes you can improvise a little bit to save the day...or maybe wind up with a new, even better dish than you were starting out with!
My cooking tragedies
My husband, supportive as though he may be, gets nervous when I start getting all "Rachael Ray" on him and trying new stuff. haha - I tried making haystack-style onion rings one time but didn't cook them right. They stunk the whole house up, and were naaaas-ty! Bummer :o)

Cake Mix Cookies IV
These are blissfully simple, and the flavor options are only limited by your imagination. Tons of different cake mix flavors out there, tons of yummies to add - I used milk chocolate cake mix and added Kraft caramel bits. Good flavor combo - however, the caramels hardened back up once the cookies cooled so if you're looking to try caramel, you might find softer caramel pieces or another option altogether. The cookies themselves were perfect, though - I chilled the dough for a few min. before rolling it into balls; also found if I made them too big they just a tad too gooey in the middle - and I love soft, almost gooey cookies! Can't wait to try all the other flavor possibilities ... this is an EXCELLENT, simple cookie recipe! Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Baked Potato Soup I
This potato soup is fantastic, and pretty easy to make (hubby's exact words: "this stuff is da bomb!")- sour cream gives it a special flavor and creaminess, and since we didn't have any leftover baked potatoes, I cooked some quick in the microwave in one of those cloth "baked potato bags" - which cut way down on the prep time. Even better the second day, and a wonderful treat for those of us freezing our butts off up here in Iowa. :-)

Rich and Simple French Onion Soup
This was easy to make, and delicious too! Once all the flavors had a chance to mingle, it really came together. I wasn't able to use my broiler, but when I put the (oven-safe) soup bowl in the oven with French bread and two kinds of cheese on top to melt, it came out looking just like the stuff I had at a restaurant a week before ... and tasted even better, because I knew everything that was in it. Didn't have any sherry, so I left it out... never even missed it. Great comfort food on a chilly evening!
