About this Cook
I've been cooking ever since I can remember. My mom is a great cook and liked to make everything from scratch. I've helped her since I was just a little kid. She even has a picture of me kneading bread at about 4 yrs old. Cooking is about the only creative thing I do, so it is an important outlet for me. In the last few years I've been trying to really eat healthy and learning to cook healthy has been a real challenge sometimes.
My favorite things to cook
I mainly like to cook not bake. I love to try all different recipes, especially anything unusual. In the last year I've been working on making stir-fry type dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family's cooking was mostly hearty comfort foods, and especially many Hungarian dishes as my grandfather was Hungarian. My mom commonly made quite a few Hungarian pastries. There was always lots of really great food at our family functions. Now I mainly save those recipes for special occasions.
My cooking tragedies
One year at x-mas my sister and I were planning on making flan for something different for the family dinner. We have both made it previously but for some reason that evening we could not make the caramel sauce that you make with it. I don't know what was going on but the sugar would go from just starting to melt to hard crystal - like rock candy, in a few seconds. We tried 2 or 3 times and it happened every time, then we gave up. We've both made it since - separately - and have been fine but apparently we can't do it together!

Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins II
I loved the glaze, that's what really made these good, but it does make them pretty lemony.

Baked Pineapple
This is a very good recipe. I was searching for one like this to replace a family recipe I’d lost and no one else in my family can seem to find either. This came out very similar to the one I lost. I know my original one didn’t have vanilla in it, but I really liked that as an addition, so I’m planning on keeping it. I also used the pineapple juice instead of the water since I don’t see the point of draining it and tossing it and then adding water. I actually only used ¼ c. of sugar because I wanted it as a side dish and not too sweet. I think it still turned out very good and fairly sweet, so depending on what I’m making it for will probably use either ¼ c. or ½ c. of sugar in the future. I think with a whole cup of sugar it would have to be a relish/topping or dessert type thing (I like the ice cream idea one of the other reviewers mentioned) and not really a side, it would be very sweet. I took it to a holiday potluck and it was served more or less room temp, by the time people ate it, but everyone liked it.

Day Before Mashed Potatoes
Very good. Of course I've added some things to it since I can never leave a recipe alone. I boil garlic cloves with the potatoes and then they are soft enough to get mashed up with the potatoes. I also usually end up adding a little more butter than the recipe calls for. Not a really calorie friendly recipe but then I only use this one for holidays or special occasions.
