About this Cook
I'm 38, engaged, with no children, and we own our own home. I work full-time as a web content editor at a publishing company outside the home. I have a round trip daily commute of 60 miles--so weeknight meals are usually quick and easy out of necessity. Sweetie works from home so he'll often take over dinner responsibilities during the week.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook are generally classic, practical, no-fuss recipes. I always keep an especially sharp eye open for healthy recipes that fit this description.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love it when family gets together; each person brings a signature dish that has been in the family for as long as I can remember. I especially like being in the kitchen during the cooking. When my mom cooks something as simple as green beans, the smells can transport me back to my great-grandmother's kitchen.
My cooking triumphs
The first time I broke away from a recipe and still ended up with something yummy was a triumph for me. Oh, and this first time Sweetie exclaimed, "This is as good as the restaurant's."
My cooking tragedies
My first attempt at cooking was oatmeal. Apparently I thought that in addition to rehydrating the oatmeal you also had to cook it down until it was re-dehydrated. My mother has a picture of the disaster. It was/is a standard joke in our house.

Garlicky Baked Butternut Squash
Oh, my! I made this recipes to spec and it was delicious! I'm heading to the grocer for more squash tonight. I may try adding a dash of cayenne, but it's great just the way it is, too.

Amazing Hawaiian Chicken Chili
I will never for the life of me understand why people insist on labelling food items as Hawaiian just because they have pineapple as an ingredient. This recipe has a lot going on, but very little going for it. I decided to give it a shot to see if something interesting might play out from the extensive ingredient list. I agree with the previous reviewer that the prep-time is much more than the recipe indicates. Sweetheart is Hawaiian and after the first bowl, he did not care for it.

Tarte Provencale
I tried this the other night for dinner and added some cubed eggplant in place of half the tomatoes. I'm glad I did, because this dish had way too much liquid. Maybe some of it should have been strained off before adding to the pie dish. Also we could hardly taste the swiss cheese. I was expecting something much more savory, but it's a good way to use up summer veggies. I'll need to tweak the recipe more to find a more satisfying flavor.
