About this Cook
I'm learning. Honestly, I've spent most of my life a complete disaster in the kitchen, but after living on my own for a few years, I've grown quite tired of Ramen noodles. I'm cathcing on, slowly, but the learning process is fun and yummy (most of the time.) I'm teaching myself to be a great cook, and I've really come to love allrecipes. It's such a great place for information and inspiration. I enjoy learning about the world through food. Exploring ingredients and cuisine's of the world.
My favorite things to cook
Everything right now, I'm a bit naive. I'm experimenting with a lot of different kinds of cooking. I love working with fresh ingredients and herbs. I haven't dabbled much in baking yet, but I think that's going to be my next attempt. I try to cook with the seasons, aiming for the freshest and tastiest produce.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Watching my mom cook and being told I'm not allowed within 5ft of the oven. She wasn't mean, she had good reason. I personally caused the death of 2 toasters, 1 microwave, the inside of an oven and an intire kitchen counter as a kid! I love hearty foods; grew up on meat and potatoes, but I'm trying to eat healthier and work in more veggies and lean meats.
My cooking triumphs
My first success was a recipe from this site. Braised Balsamic Chicken. It came out perfect and really upped my confidence level. Recently I've had a little success with some great Halibut fillets and a couple of nice steaks. I made a strawberry-chocolate mousse cake that came out beautifully!
My cooking tragedies
Ooooo... too many to count. I've actually screwed up Jello before. Yeah, the instant kind. Like I said, I'm not naturally good at this, so in the beginning there were far more tragedies than successes, but recently, I've learned to adapt in the kitchen and fix problems as they occur. Lately, my tragedies are becoming much less tragic.

Caramelized Baked Chicken
We liked these, but the sauce was a bit thin, and I would have liked it to coat the chicken more. The flavor is nice and the chicken was very tender and moist, but the flavor of the sauce didn't really penetrate into the chicken. Next time, after mixing the sauce, I'll boil it and then allow it to reduce a bit, for a "stickier" wing. I'll add 4 cloves for a bit more flavor, and some extra seasonings to the chicken before adding the sauce. A good recipe, could be great with a few small alterations.

Cheesy Pork Chops with Spicy Apples
We all really liked this. I thought the flavor combinations were really exciting. The apples and cheese are a nice balance. Next time, more onion. I did adjust the recipe to cook on the stove due to the weather. Here's what I did: Cooked the onions first, then added then added the apples and cooked uncovered for about 5 minutes. Removed the onions/apples from the pan and added the pork chops. Browned well on each side, then covered and simmered for about 10 minutes in some white wine vinegar and more balsamic vinegar. Once the pork chops were almost done, I added the apple mixture back into the pan, topped with the cheese, and covered again until the cheese melted. Served with sweet potato fries and green beans. A really nice meal.

Honey-Garlic Glazed Meatballs
I save my 5-star reviews for life-changing meals. That said, this is a 4 1/2. Delicious and so simple. The meatballs are the perfect texture (and I'm picky about my meatballs) and the sauce is AWESOME! I did add an extra 3 or 4 cloves of garlic to the meatball mixture. I'm sure the recipe's fine without it, but we love garlic, so there's never too much. Only complaint: a touch too much salt. I'll cut back to 1tsp next time, as the soy sauce in the glaze has quite a bit. Overall great! A definite keeper!
