I am a divorced mom. I wasn't able to do a lot of real cooking the past few years, but I am getting back into it again. I was vegetarian for several years, but started eating seafood and poultry again a few years ago when I realized I needed some animal protein to stabilize my blood sugar when I ended up with gestational diabetes. I am fairly health conscious, but live life in moderation.
My favorite things to cook
I like to make appetizers, pasta, and rice dishes, vegetables, and main dishes. I don't really like sweets that much so I don't do many desserts or other baked goods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I don't really follow my family traditions much. I eat completely different than the food I was raised on. I did learn many of my cooking techniques and modifications from my mother though. She is a pretty good cook too and she likes to experiment as well. I guess I did learn spaghetti sauce from her, but I have evolved it into my own.
My cooking triumphs
I make awesome spaghetti sauce, hot black bean dip, and Vegetarian Sloppy Joe's! I also have found ways to turn many recipes healthier by substitutions and sometimes making it better- making something gluten free or healthy for diabetics is something I try to do more of because eating these things is just healthier for everyone not just people with those health issues. I try to make people more aware of health through some of my cooking.
My cooking tragedies
The tragedy is that I don't remember to write down what I put into things sometimes and then it turns out awesome and then I don't have a recipe to make it again. I hate measuring so I almost always estimate and to make a recipe that someone else can use, you have to know what measurements to use. I need to work on that! I should have a whole cookbook by now!
