I work as an archaeologist and therefore I really appreciate good food. Archaeologists don't eat much good food when they're working.
I'm 24 and have been cooking for about 15 years now.
I plan to post some recipes as soon as I figure out how I make things. I don't usually measure anything unless I'm baking. I don't review many recipes because I usually alter them to the point it's not even the same recipe anymore and then it's just unfair to rate it.
My favorite things to cook
I love using the griddle (especially for veggies) and the crockpot (especially for soup). I make a lot of fish, chicken, and turkey because I won't eat red meat and my husband won't eat pork.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Mom pretty much only cooks at Christmas, and that's part of why I love Christmas. My Dad cooks a lot, but the meal I remember most fondly is whenever he'd make shrimp and artchokes. He'd leave the shells on the shrimp and we ate the whole artichokes, so we'd end up sitting there for hours slowly eating and talking. This only happened when artickokes were in-season and the shrimp was on sale, so it was a really special dinner. It made him want to talk about growing up in CA, so that's when we learned a lot about our dad.
My cooking triumphs
I learned how to make chocolate-chip cookies when I was about 8 or 9, and didn't need the recipe by about 10. I was really proud of that. I'm pretty good at making stuff up, too, and getting some variation out of turkey and chicken all the time, cause we can only afford one fish meal a week and even a huge vegetarian meal leaves us both hungry in 2 hours, unless it's loaded with spinach.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I tried to stir-fry I started a fire. And the first time I tried to fry catfish I filled the dorm with thick smoke. Oh, and I was experimenting with the cookies by the time I was 11, and I made the most disgusting-looking cookies you've ever seen! I threw too much banana in the recipie and they came out so mushy and flat. They didn't taste bad, but no-one wanted to eat them. I also made a terrible spagetti one time by adding too much sugar. I had to just throw it out. I was really sad because I was in college and had planned on eating that all week. I think I had to eat tuna and crackers all week instead!
