i did it. my hair is so short i don't use shampoo, i don't carry a comb. conditioner...what's that anyways? i never used it or a hair-dryer anyways. i had a friend that used all that and even had a mirror hung behind him so he could check out how the back of his hair looked. i was intrigued, and then realized how stupid that was. his hair was perfect. remember that warren zevon song, werewolves of london? anyways..claire update---she is still doing terrific. we have issues with multi-tasking, some math skills, and balance. but all minor things...she has come so far i know i'm greedy and want her totally back asap, she will be. patience is not one of mine or her virtures. she is so sweet with her large trusting light blue eyes and buzz cut. look at the picture of her to the right. she is still gorgeous but now in a totally different way. almost child-like. but she is not mentally impaired. she has lost maybe 25 pounds, she looks terrific! she reminds me of those old big-eyed waif/puppie pictures. she is a natural beauty. boy did i marry out of my league! may your family be safe this late summer evening. be kind to a stranger tomorrow... love builds upon itself.

Hi Gary, so happy to hear that all is well and that Claire is still progressing. It's funny, I have looked at your picture for so long, that that is what I think that you look like. I know that a few years must have passed but, to me, that is you and Claire, timeless. Take care friend. Big (((hugs)) from Oregon. Luv ya

gderr & Claire....such progress, frustrating in some aspects but soooo rewarding (especially when we were so scared for so long). Gary is right Claire, we are all YOUR friends too, especially after the journey you took us on via Gary. We're all still rooting for you!

I had to laugh at Pelicangal's comment. I do the same thing. Silly, but you both are frozen in 1975 in my mind. So happy the new continues to be good. Claire, you are an amazing lady and you are lucky to have such a wonderful man. God Bless you both, Chris

she is not yet ready to read the blogs i've posted here. i'm sure she will later at some point. she had started reading my more personal journal i was keeping, but i think it depressed her so she has stopped. she does not remember her 1st 5 weeks after the stroke. she had spent a week in atlanta, at the shepherd center before she had a running memory up. i can't blame her about noy wanting to read about those times...it was very scary. she will want to know eventually and that's why i will not delete any posts, blogs or personal notes left concerning her.

Hi Gary- I have been thinking of you and Claire a lot in the last few weeks, and wondering how she has been doing. I am so very glad that things are progressing. God can use anything, even the bad, so maybe it's patience that you(individually or together) are to learn. May God continue to bless you and your family. -Ellen

It's been a long tough road for you two and I admire your bond. It's so relieving to read these positive blogs after such a scary ordeal. Blessings to you both, you're both wonderful beings.

It's good to hear you needing to deal with these types of issues--such a far cry from the first days of your ordeal. How wonderful life is! Take care, both of you!

I am amazed to continuously have these wonderful updates! Isn't the human body a marvelous thing. You are a real encouragement to me, and a know Claire is blessed to have you for her soul mate. Buzzing your hair is just one of the many ways you show just how much you care how she feels. And that she is comfortable as can be while she deals with this extended healing process. Keep smiling it helps, and Claire will wonder what you are up to now. ♥

Hi Gary. Henceforth may all the major issues of your lives be no more than questions of hair style; and may God bless you all more and more and more... Grace to you all, and great peace with prosperity in all that concerns you. kdstreet

Gary & Claire, so, so glad to hear that upbeat tone to your blog. Those baby steps are working their way up to a bit of a jog the way I see it. Pretty soon you'll be training for a marathon. Which really is what your life is all about isn't it? On a side note, Gary...was that picture taken in 1975? You look just like the guy that sat in front of me in my sociology class. Every Monday morning we would recap the old SNL shows, and just laugh all through class. I see you being that kind of guy too. ♥ to both of you.

Wow, Gary!! You have come such a long way in your blogs. The first one asking for prayers, then the bad experience with the nurse, eating in the hospital cafeteria in tears, moving to the Shepherd Center, now you are in a panic about your hair. I had to laugh out loud!! Things are really looking up for you and Claire and I know she knows in her heart how much you truly love her. In spite of it all she is a lucky lady!! Peace to both of you!! Jeanie

Hey Gary & Claire!! Another day in paradise. Like everyone else here has eluded to, you dance across my mind during the day and I am now happy that you are both doing well. I know there will be rough spots ahead. But after what you two have gone through I'm sure those rough spots will be almost laughable. Continued good wishes for more recovery.-- Rohnda in California

Hello Gary and Claire (you'll read this some day Claire). I too am thrilled to read more positive things in this blog. Seems every time I come here the news is better and it just sounds happier. I'm so happy you're doing so much better Claire.. your man loves you very much (and that's an understatement). I am still in awe (did I spell that right?). A love like that comes but once in a lifetime. I just wanted to let you know you're all still in my thoughts all the time and I'm still praying for your complete recovery Claire. I hope, one day before too terrible long, we (me and my hubby) and you two can meet up for a coffee when you're feeling up to it Claire. I've gotten all moved in here in Hilton Head so I don't think we live all that far apart. We go to Savannah all the time. You two take care and keep caring for each other. I'll be thinking of you both.

Sorry I am so very late in responding to your blog but Gary you are an inspiration to all that have the privilege of reading your words. You are kind beyond compare, generous with your friends and one hell of a game show host!! I was on the side lines for today's game time festivities(movies and food theme) You are the MOST! Your wife is also lucky! Maybe you both married up! Whatcha think of that? I pray for Claire's continued success and to Gods speed for a quick full recovery for her too! Take care and give Claire a hug from the West Coast:):) Love, Patty

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
