About this Cook
I'm a free-lance artist who hops around many North American cities. This has given me the chance to try the many local and international cuisines this great continent has to offer. Currently residing in Manhattan with my small kitchen I try to make the most if it. My mantra is eating gourmet, local , healthy and on a small budget. I very rarely measure things or follow recipes exactly. My mother says I have a knack for knowing what flavours work together.
My favorite things to cook
Clam Chowder, gumbo, bean salads, curries and anything with quinoa!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Although I grew up in the great white north in a very traditional Canadian family, my meals growing up always had a soul food twist. My Dad had spent a lot of time in the American south and knows how to make the best fried chicken, mashed potatoes and southern seafood stews. My parents cooked a lot of meat and potatoes so me and my brother rebelled in our teenage years by adopting vegetarian and raw food diets. Although now, I am a very happy meat-eater... my brother is still a vegetarian.
My cooking triumphs
Learning to make french roux changed my life.
My cooking tragedies
Latkes, and once I prepared an intense Eggplant parmesan only to discover that my bread crumbs were over a year expired after I had put it in the oven.

Lentil Soup III
This is a great base for lentil soup. However, the last 10 minutes I added a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and dry red wine. It was amazing.

Shrimp Scampi V
This was so simple, easy and tasty. I added about a tablespoon of flour to make it a little more saucy and thick, added parsley and used a touch less wine. Next time I would probably add some fresh spinach right at the end. Great recipe though. But, as my boyfriend mentioned though, it's pretty hard to make anything with wine, garlic butter and shrimp taste bad!

Orange Oatmeal Muffins
These muffins had a nice orange flavor, not too sweet and very moist. I changes I made were applesauce instead of butter, and I used 1/2 c. of raw sugar instead of brown or white sugar. Also, I topped them with chopped walnuts which really made them good. Only suggestion is that there was too much baking soda flavour! Next time I will probably use 1 1/2 tsp. of baking powder instead.
