About this Cook
I am a Wife, Mom and Graphic Designer. I have all kinds of varied interests including design of course, online gaming (MMORPG variety), arts and crafts, ets. I grew up in a small town in Iowa and now live in Iowa's capital city. It's still not big city life but it's big enough for me.
My favorite things to cook
I love trying new recipes. I enjoy many different types of food from lean dining options to fat-laden home cooking. I love it all and I like adapting existing recipes to my own taste. Right now I am trying to learn a bit more about Japanese cooking and there is quite a lot to learn.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up around lots of baking and cooking. My mom ran her own cake/catring/gingerbread house business out of our home so she was always busy making something. She also liked to make lots of chinese food at home and try out other international styles of cooking. This was good exposure for me as a child because there just weren't many international food tasting opportunities anywhere around where I grew up. This must have inspired my brother as well because he went on to go to culinary school and is now an executive chef. Though I don't cook or bake professionally, I've toyed with the idea of someday rekindling my mom's home baking business. Maybe someday - we'll see.
My cooking triumphs
I consider any time I make something new that my whole family enjoys a triumph.
My cooking tragedies
Well, I tried to make a diet version of a shepherd's pie the other night - it was just horrible. lol

Aunt Phyllis' Magnificent Cheese Ball
I think this is a great basic cheeseball recipe. I used 1/3 fat cream cheese and reduced fat cheddar cheese and it worked fine - you'd never know the differenc either but the calories and fat you save are HUGE. I highly recommend doing it that way. I made it for a haloween party and everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. The only addition I made was some garlic powder. I think it'd be great with a bunch of chopped olives thrown in.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili
This was amazing chili. It was some work chopping and whatnot but it was fun and definitely worth it. I made it just as written except I used 3 large jalapenos in a HALF batch to make it extra spicy. I also added a little extra chili powder when I was browning the meat. This was the first chili recipe where I didn't have to reach for extra chili powder after it was cooked - everything was perfect! My husband said this was his favorite homemade chili he's ever had and he wouldn't just say that if he didn't mean it! Try this one!!! If you make a whole batch I hope you have a BIG pot. This makes quite a bit.

Hot Italian Giardiniera
This was delicious. I had never heard of giardiniera before, but needed some for a recipe so I decided to make my own. I used what was left just for snacking and also on some ham sandwiches - it was awesome! It takes some work but I'd definitely make it again. I need to learn how to preserve as the batch was huge for just my husband and I.
