I gave this a four star rating because there are a few tweaks that will greatly improve these. First, just use a cup of butter and omit the shortening for a chewy but cooked texture. Also, I'm going to omit the white sugar and maybe even cut back to 3/4 c of brown sugar because they are just too sweet. And finally, maybe at a pinch (1/8 tsp) of nutmeg. Otherwise very, very good base recipe.
