Chefs you admire:
A lot of my friends' moms growing up were fantastic chefs.
What cooking shows do you watch?
I don't have cable! but when I am occasionally around a TV I like Top Chef.
Your must-have kitchen accessory is:
My rub-away. (Essentially a stainless steel bar of soap. It takes away the yucky smell that chopping onions or garlic leaves on your hands)
What is your go-to ingredient?
Cumin.
How many courses should a meal have?
For family, just one made with a lot of love. For company, always three.
What's your favorite course?
Dessert.
What famous person, living or dead, would you like to make a meal for?
My grandma. I never got to meet her, but my mom says that she would love my cooking.
And, what would you serve them?
Scallops mascarpone with asparagus and shittake mushrooms.
What's your favorite style of cooking?
Anything that depends on olive oil.
What nationality of food do you like the best?
I love Indian, but I am a pretty big failure when it comes to cooking it.
What's your favorite meal of the day to prepare?
A big breakfast for my hunny.
Where do you find inspiration when creating a new dish?
Always allrecipes. Its usually a recipe that I look at and think "what a good idea, but that's not how to do it!"
Who has been your greatest inspiration in the kitchen?
My friend Kate - she taught me a ton about gardening for the kitchen, local food systems, and natural and organic food.
What is your favorite comfort food?
pierogies.
Do you ever eat fast food? If so, what?
Once every three months or so. And its almost always chicken nuggets.
What restaurant do you want to eat at that you haven't eaten at yet?
There's a new mexican place in town. I hear they make great guac.
What do you serve at Thanksgiving dinner?
I count on relatives to do all that, and usually just bring a great dip.
Are there wines or liquors that you cook with?
I cook with red wine for marinades a lot because friends bring it over, but I don't really like to drink it. I use white wine for light pasta dishes, and tequila when I'm making shrimp tacos.
How much time do you spend cooking a meal just for yourself?
maybe 15 minutes, max.
What would be your dream job as a chef?
Personal chef for someone with no food dislikes.
What scent in the kitchen do you love – what ingredient smells the best?
Garlic a couple of seconds after it hits hot olive oil
What ingredients do you avoid/dislike?
hot peppers
What's your secret splurge at the grocery store?
oh, this is where i get into trouble. fancy cheeses, nice olive oil, ground beef alternatives (bison, ostrich)
What's your favorite midnight snack?
thin mint cookies
