About this Cook
I am of Irish, Austrian, and Hungarian descent, and I live in the South--all these things show in my mannerisms and personality. It's kind of conflicting, actually--I show contempt for the upper class, yet live a relatively decadent lifestyle for my own middle class upbringing. I try to be polite and kind to strangers, but those who know me know that I view just about everyone, even friends, with contempt. I enjoy studying history, US and European history, to be precise, and am looking to minor in it in college. My major is still up in the air--several careers have come to mind. French translator, baker or pastry chef, temp, or just a housewife. Whatever is needed of me.
My favorite things to cook
Desserts: I've had several people ask me to bake them my cookies (no big feat, really) and my boyfriend loves my cobblers. My only real problem used to be cakes, but I've gotten much better. I also make decent fried chicken, though I'm still trying out different oils to get the best result, and I love to make potatoes of any sort.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Before my father died, he'd slow-cook roast beef with carrots, potatoes, and turnips every Sunday. It was delicious, and if I hadn't given away the crockpot, I'd be making it too. Someday I'll get around to buying one.
My cooking triumphs
Nothing special; I made a very pretty Buche de Noel for my French III class, and they loved it.
My cooking tragedies
I once tried to make cheesecake topped brownies off a recipe here, but I tried to change it from a blondie recipe to a chocolate one, and that failed miserably...they were dry and bitter and the cream cheese mixture on top burned (and smelled like burnt cheese toast at that). Also, I've never been able to make a decent Boston Cream Pie: the first time, I bought it already made in a box, and I couldn't get it to thaw properly, second time, I bought a kit for it, and it was miserable, and recently I attempted to bake one from scratch, and the cream was too thin, the cake was vaguely bitter...the only good thing was the chocolate sauce. I think it's a curse.

Idaho Potato Cake
Heh, my boyfriend absolutely loves potatoes, but he was a little scared to hear they were going into cake. But this was very good. Quite dense and moist. I paired it up with k. blackburn's Chocolate Butter-Cream Frosting, and replaced the nuts with chocolate chips. I'll definitely make this next time I want chocolate cake.

Brooke's Best Bombshell Brownies
I always prefer to follow a recipe exactly before messing with it; I liked them how it is, but next time I bake these, I'll follow the other reviewers and do 2 cups white and 1 cup brown sugar. Instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips I chopped up about twenty dark chocolate Dove candies, and I topped the still-hot brownies with white chocolate shavings to let them melt. Very good, and nice and sweet. Thanks for sharing.

Oreo(TM) Cookie Bark
Very simple, very sweet. I love it, it tastes like Hershey's Cookies and Cream bars. I broke the Oreos into quarters, and crumbled up the excess cookies on the top of it before it set.
