Well, it will be a few days until I get a fresh delivery...

I'm going to write about the produce that comes in my CSA box every two weeks and what I did (or didn't do) with it. My most recent box arrived the week before last, so almost everything in it is gone at this point. There are a few apples left, a little spinach, and some sweet potatoes. I used some of the spinach in a salad last week and on a pizza. Actually, I just took a look in the kitchen, and there is half an avocado remaining, as well. Aw, rats! I'd hate to waste that!

The pizza was excellent. I used Jay's Signature Pizza Crust: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Jays-Signature-Pizza-Crust/Detail.aspx<

To be perfectly honest, I don't usually work from recipes except when it comes to baking. However, I almost always check out a few recipes when I cook to get a general idea of what to do, what flavors might work well together, how much stuff to use, and that kind of thing. I love to cook and spend time in the kitchen. Even when it is hectic it is very relaxing. The bi-weekly CSA box is perfect for me, because I enjoy looking around to see what ingredients I have and making up a recipe based on what's at hand.

My box is interesting -- much of the content is grown on the farm out near Carnation, WA (thankfully, they were not flooded last week!), but they also get organic produce from other farms in the region (and sometimes even exotic places like California) so there is often fresh fruit that might not otherwise be available.

My favorite item to find in the box? Mushrooms!!!

I used to use a CSA box and stopped. Maybe with this blog I'll get some good ideas and start it up again.

I'm thinking about joining a CSA because I love the idea of supporting local growers but I don't always make it to the farmers' market during the growing season, let alone during the winter. Do you always use up everything that comes in the box? Do you find yourself making a lot of soup at the end? Do you notice a difference in the quality of produce? Thanks, and I look forward to following your blog.

Hi foodelicious -- Despite my best intentions, I do not always use up everything in the box! (I'm not touching that old spinach at this point.) I do sometimes end up making soups -- as you imply, it is a great way to avoid wasting otherwise unused vegetables (mmm, pureed sunchoke soup!). Concerning the quality, the produce is extraordinarily fresh most of the time, so that much of it actually lasts up to 2 weeks (since it hasn't already been sitting in a grocery store distribution warehouse for a week). It's not too expensive to join the CSA, and it's really fun. It helps that I am fortunate to have the drop-off point 2 blocks from my house.

I wish we had a CSA here in my area. You are so fortunate. I joined when I lived in CO and really miss having a local group!

My wife & I are stuck in Northern Indiana & do not have access to CSA (assuming it's some sort of a mail order co-op). What is your growing season in Washington - we garden too & may want to do some trading.
