I love to cook! I'm a medical student, so I have very little time. I'm a master of quick meals and desserts. I love to try new desserts and dinners. I am also mastering the grill--I cook all year 'round on it. We live on a very tight budget (thanks, government), so I had to learn how to shop with very little.
Some day I'll have the kitchen of my dreams with all the appliances I need. Until then, I'll be paying back 300k in loans :( (this, folks, is why people specialize)
My favorite things to cook
Anything. I love making different stews. I just throw anything into a pot. I LOVE my pressure cooker--it's a medical student's best friend. I love making desserts--I just mastered a double-layered chocolate cake with chocolate icing. It doesn't really look pretty, but it tastes awesome.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have a multi-blended family of Hungarian and Italian. From both I've learned to cook by taste. I just sort of know what ingredients go well together, or what needs added. That being said, I'm often the one who can pick out most ingredients in a recipe. From my Hungarian side I've learned that sour cream in anything = delicious (light works just as well). From my Italian side, I've learned how to cook dinner for a small army when I'm really cooking for 2.
My cooking triumphs
I often invite friends over for dinner. Last year I did a Thanksgiving dinner (a little late--more like post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas). As I said before, I mastered Ina Garten's chocolate cake. I win!!
My cooking tragedies
When I first started cooking, I made an apple pie for a boyfriend and took it when I visited him. I wanted him to taste it first, but someone in his family ate it. When I tasted it--it tasted horribly (waaay too much lemon, thanks county cookbook) and I made him throw it out. No one admitted to eating it or how horrible it was.
Last week I was using the pressure cooker and the rubber stopper in the lid wasn't in completely. I thought I could poke it back in, but I pushed it completely into the pot only to have all my stew broth shoot out (about 3 feet, easily) and all over the kitchen. I had to start over completely, and lost an hour's work.
