About this Cook
My partner, Sylvan, and I love to cook. Every week we have people over for informal dinners. We especially like Spanish, Thai, Indian and Chinese food.
My favorite things to cook
I love salads with fresh vegetables. Also, I like the comforting smells of a roast with root vegetables.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every week we invite friends over to cook and eat with us. Best of all, my friends clean up afterward so it's really nice and relaxing for me.
My cooking triumphs
Last month Syl and I cooked for a friend's wedding. Our food was the hit of the party.
My cooking tragedies
Although I'd admit to all of them, they are too numerous to select just one. With each meal, there are challenges and small emergencies. That's what makes it fun. Thankfully, I structure my meals in such a way that one error or small tragedy won't blow the whole event out of the water. Life is too short and food is too plentiful to pin the success of a gathering on one thing.

Coleslaw
I use this recipe (with less sugar when I'm eating it) for nearly all of my raw vegetable salad dishes. Sometimes I chop cucumber, carrot, crushed garlic and tomato and add the oil, vinegar and sugar. For spice, I might add one or more of the following: chili pepper, herbs de provance, oregano, celery seed, pepper flakes, ancho chili powder. When making the slaw with cabbage I use the red kind because it's so beautiful but it does need to to sit for a day as the cabbage needs time to absorb the acid of the vinegar and breakdown some of the "rubbery squeakiness" on the teeth. I also add about a teaspoon of some fresh herb (yesterday it was parsley). I think it needs some green herb.
