About this Cook
I am a single Dad in Seattle. I'm rediscovering my kitchen and loving every second in it. I love trying new recipies, especially spicy ones. I find the best recipies in old cookbooks - new ones are far too healthy and fat sensitive to be really (sinfully?) good. Go to your used bookstore or garage sales - anything from before 1985 or so = great.
My favorite things to cook
I love a few pasta dishes passed down from my family, and like to make my own sauces. It's rather easy and, IMHO, far better than store bought!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every now and then I invite my friends over for a game-night potluck. I provide most of the real food, and many of my associates believe pot-luck = bring chips. It's fun to cook for a full house!
My cooking triumphs
I finally got over myself and started making bread from scratch. I really enjoy it, not sure why I was so afraid of the whole yeast / proofing / rising / kneading thing.
My cooking tragedies
Ribs. I took a perfectly good rack of beef ribs, worked all day to prepare them for the grill, put them over the fire... and got distracted. Nothing left but ashes. It was tragic.

Flat Iron Steak with Three Pepper Rub
Great. I discovered I didn't have any cumin, substituted cayene pepper in same amount, seemed to work just fine.

Spicy Lime Grilled Shrimp
Very good, very easy. Initial bite it seemed too salty, but after the second shrimp it was just right. Entire pound of shrimp was devoured within minutes of hitting the table.

Amish White Bread
Very good. Still trying to figure out the yeast and rising - several times the yeast fails to proof (despite being new from store and not expired). Tried hotter water (115F) - seemed to work better.
