Slow Cooker Mongolian Beef

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2009
This was my first time buying flank steak, and i think it's a very good meat cut for this recipe. I did not find this recipe to be too salty nor toow sweet, however, i did use 1.5 cups of water instead of just 1/2 cup. I also did not slow cook, i made it on the stove top and let it simmer on low for about 30 minutes. I think if i had simmered it for another 30 minutes, the steak would ahve been perfectly tenderized, but not mushy. My boyfriend was a little bit indifferent about the recipe, but i quite liked it. I added mushrooms and a few dashes of cayenne pepper.

Crab Ceviche

I made this for a friend's potluck BBQ. This was gone in 5 minutes. It's so easy to make too. I'd make this again.

Chicken Cordon Bleu II

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2009
I love creamy dishes and especially cooking with wine. This was good except the chicken was not cooked inside. I would recommend baking the chicken after the browning. I also found the cornstarch to lump in the whipping cream. I'd dilute the cornstarch with a bit of water before mixing it in with the whipping cream. The sauce needs a dash of salt.

Bangers and Mash

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2009
I used spicy italian sausage and canned gravy. Sausage was good, gravy was good, mashed potatoes was good. The recipe itself is pretty simple to make and is pretty good meal, but it's time consuming making your own mash potatoes. Now something you want to make on a hot summer day.

Bourbon Chicken

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2009
I didn`t have bourbon, so used white wine instead, so maybe it wasn`t as good as it should be. I followed the rest of the recipe, except I didn't have time to marinate overnight. This came out good, but nothing spectacular.

Stuffed Halibut

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2009
I used tilapia instead of halibut. For the stuffing I used shrimps and scallops. I also added a bit of breadcrumbs for texture. I was afraid the melted cream cheese would be too sloppy, so the breadcrumbs helped make it thicker. I forgot the lemon. The results were good, but the fish really needs a bit of flavor. I added parsley and paprika, but that doesn`t add much flavor. Fiance liked it and said it was different, because he has never has cream cheese in a dish before. I`d make this again, but need to alter the recipe. Perhaps a more flavorful fish would have helped...

Lahmahjoon (Armenian Pizza)

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2009
I decided to try this recipe after it was featured on the front of allrecipes.com. I can't recall if I have ever tried Lamahjoon before, but the recipe looked easy and quick to make. As suggested by the recipe, I made the filling the day before to let the flavors blend, and I think this does make a difference. I used ground beef instead of ground lamb, because im not a fan of lamb. I also used dried mint leaves crushed, it was what I had. And used yellow bell pepper instead, but i think it gave it a nice sweetness. This came out pretty good and I liked how the pita was pefectly crispy, sadly it`s not great to bring as a lunch to work. The pita gets a bit mushy. My fiancee liked it and I think i'll be making this again.

Crispy Herb Baked Chicken

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2009
I really wanted to like this because it got such great reviews. I made it with two butterflied chicken breasts and baked it at 400 for 25mins on a baking rack. The chicken was crispy, but a bit dry. I might have overcooked. I had to go out to buy the instant mashed potaotes specially for this recipe when I had breadcrumbs at home. And I couldn't make the difference between the two. Also this recipe is called crispy herb baked chicken, where is the herb in the recipe? I added paprika and thyme in the mix. I thought the parmasan was a bit overpowering. I'd suggest using less. I will not be making this again...i don't even know what to do with the 2nd pouch of mashed potatoes...we prefer real mashed potatoes.

Grilled Tilapia with Mango Salsa

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2009
I made this recipe with chicken instead of fish and it was yummy. My fiance told me the marinade on the chicken taste a bit like pesto. I cut down the EVOO drastically. I used about a tbs. The mango takes a bit of preparing, but it's worth it. I didn't have fresh coriander, so I used frozen cubes of minced coriander from my freezer. I'd make this again.

Singapore Noodles

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2009
I gave this recipe only a three because I had to make adjustments. But it`s a good base recipe. To start, don't use pasta. that's just wrong. I used vermicelli noodles from the Asian market. I reduced the curry powder to 1tbs and it was plenty. I added a it of ginger powder (I didn't have fresh). I used cayenne pepper for spicy. I used only shrimp, red pepper, onion, and an oriental mix of frozen veggies. I also added fish sauce (about a tbs), sesame oil (1 tbs), and sugar (2tbs). This turned out pretty good. It could have used some minced pork and also some scrambled eggs. With the changes, my picky fiance told me this was good.

Baingan Bharta (Eggplant Curry)

Reviewed: May 31, 2009
I didn't follow the recipe completely but used it as a guide...For starters, I peeled my eggplant first and then put it in the oven for about 27 min. I also added ground pork, since my fiance will complain about being hungry without meat. I cooked mixed in 1.5 tbs of cornstarch, garlic salt, garam masala, and sugar into the meat, and cooked it during step two (cooking the onions with cumin). I also added some boiled new potatoes (cut in half). I tasted the dish several times and added salt, sugar, and garam masala until it tasted right. I also had to add some water because the mixture was a bit dry, I didn't have any yogurt. This ended up not looking too pretty, but tasted good. I would make again...and I don't like eggplant.

Honey Ginger Shrimp

Reviewed: May 4, 2009
I took off one star because I had to change the recipe. I used 2-3 Tbsp of honey and 1 1/2 tsp of the red chili flakes. I also added a dash of lime juice and some chopped coriander. Doubled the ginger to 2tsp.And this was delicious over coconut rice. My fiance didn't like the rice, and thought the shrimp was just okay. But i loved both.

Stuffed Peppers My Way

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2009
I subbed the italian seasoning with Mrs Dash. I also cooked some ground beef to make the recipe "boyfriend approved". I just cooked the ground beef with the green onions. Then drained the fat, added the basil, Mrs Dash, a bit of pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper. I've made stuffed peppers before. I can't recall which recipe i used, but was very disappointed. But this one is a winner.

Creme Brulee French Toast

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2009
IS there something i'm doing wrong? I made this as a dessert for Vday. I used 10 sliced of French bread and there was just way too much of the egg mixture. My bread just floated to the surface. Was my bread supposed to absorb all the egg stuff, because it did not and when I put it in the oven to bake it was this soggy mess. As someone once reviewed, this is bread pudding.I finally gave up after 35 min in the oven. I took it out and moved the soggy bread onto a baking sheet and baked it for 15 mins on 350. That was much better, i will try again but i will not bake it in the mixture. I will remove them and bake on a baking sheet. Sorry, I think the recipe instractions are all wrong. The taste is great though.

Garam Masala Seared Salmon with Coconut-Curry Butter

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2009
I used Rainbow Trout instead of Salmon, and baked the Trout instead of searing it. But when i baked it, i forgot to rub it with garam masala. The sauce is really good, however, it took me about 20 min to reduce it. I also had to use some sugar and salt to add a bit of taste to the sauce. It was really great on the fish. We loved it.

Mini Sweet Potato Samosas

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2009
My friend and I made these as part of our Indian Feast night. We couldn't find wonton wrappers at my local grocery store (they ran out), so we bought spring roll/ egg roll wrappers, which are thicker and bigger. We doubled the filling recipe and used water to seal instead. Everything else we followed. Baking egg roll wrappers were just not possible...the powder stayed on the samosas. The wrapper was chewy for the most part, the corners were crispy. We finally had to fry them to get that crispy outside. Very good when crispy. Not too happy about the oil though. The filling is a winner though.

Japanese-Style Sesame Green Beans

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2009
The taste was great, however I skipped ther toatsed sesame. I didn't have any. I added a little bit of sugar in case the soy sauce was too salty. Like many, I thought the green beans were way too oily. Next time i'll cook the green beans with water, once all water is evaporated and green beans are tender, i'll toss it in the sesame oil. I would make this again. I think my vegetable-hating boyfriend liked them.

Honey-Ginger Grilled Salmon

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2009
I wasn't too sure about this recipe at first, but it turned out great. I marinaded overnight. The fish was really yummy. I used a bit of dehydrated garlic slices to the marinade as well. I thought I had fresh garlic in the fridge, but was mistaken. I also think i want to use a bit less orange juice next time. On some bites, i could taste it more than usual. I served it with the Japanese-Style Green Beans, as suggested by someone here.

Spicy Garlic and Pepper Shrimp

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2008
This was an easy recipe to make. I'd suggest using more water in the first step to cook the cabbage. This will also give you more sauce. I think I like my cabbage to be a little more tender, next time i'll cook for more than 30 seconds as well. Reduce pepper flakes if you dont like too spicy. I'd also maybe add a bit of sugar to accentuate the taste. This was a decent meal, but it felt like something was missing.

Chunky Potato Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2008
I have never made potato soup before. This was pretty easy. I had a can of chicken broth and it did not measure up to 1 1/2 cups. It came to a little over a cup, so i had to add water. But 1 1/2 cups of water was not enough to cover my potatoes, celery, carrots, and onions to simmer. So I had to add an additional cup and a half of water. To compensate, I had to use salt, so it wouldn't be bland. I added Thyme, garlic powder, parsley flakes, and a bit of cayenne pepper. The result was great. I loved it. Right before serving i used cheddar and some bacon bits. I would make again!
