I am married and have 3 children (17, 13, 10). I love to cook as often as I can. I have a special interest in back to basic, from scratch cooking. I even grind my own wheat into flour. My family thinks my bread is the best!!
My favorite things to cook
Bread, cookies, slow cooker meals and anything that my kids will gobble up.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cooking together as a family is my favorite tradition. We also have set menus for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It just wouldn't be the same if one dish were changed for another.
My cooking triumphs
Learning to grind various staples, such as legumes, popcorn, wheat berries, oats, etc and turning the flours into wonderful dishes and baked goods that my family loves.
My cooking tragedies
Being a newlywed, I wanted to impress my mother-in-law by making her a b-day cake. My mom always used 2 boxes of Jiffy Brand Cake Mix to make a 9x13 rectangular cake. Thinking that all cake mixes were the same when it came to measurements, I followed my mother's example and used two boxes of the Pillsbury Cake Mix I had chosen for the occasion. I was so wrong! I made one batter out of the two boxes and poured all of it into a 9x13 pan. When the recommended time was up (25 minutes) the cake had barely started cooking. Confused, I figured that my oven’s thermostat was off a little. I ended up baking the cake for almost 1 hour and 30 minutes. At this point the cake was burnt around the edges and soupy in the middle. Surprisingly, when I served the cake edges my in-laws ate it without one complaint. Truly believing the oven was to blame, I complained to our apartment manager and ended up with a new stove. However, even with the new stove I was never asked to make another cake.
