I am Mee-Maw to 4 delightful gifts from God, 2 beautiful girlie girls and 2 wildly adventuresome boys. My greatest love is spending time with my grandangels and my 3 grown children. I have a great love for life and I love trying new things. Cooking for all of them is a joy and I love trying new recipes. They are great at letting me try new recipes on them. As my oldest grandangel proudly tells everyone, "If Mee-Maw cooked it, it’s got to be good". My baby sister is my best friend and we have such a great relationship and man, oh man, can we giggle. We love getting together and taking mom shopping or just hanging out and doing crafts with her, we all have so much fun together. I also love spending time with my parents who instilled in me my love of food and cooking as well as a great sense of self worth and confidence that I try to pass on to my children and grandangels.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite food group would have to be chips and salsa. Yes, around my house chips and salsa are a food group. And I love to prepare a huge Mexican feast complete with tacos, rice, beans, green stew, great enchiladas and home fried chips to go with the guacamole and home made salsa that my kids are all famous for making. Each has their own style and taste and they are all great and hot! Everyone always loves my Spaghetti w/Meatballs so I love making meatballs for them. I make huge meatballs. I love making tempting desserts and hearing the, "Oh, I shouldn't but, it is so good!"
My favorite family cooking traditions
Oh, I love family get togethers. We are a great bunch of people who enjoy great food and the great company of each other. Everyone always brings tried and true family recipes. We get together for Holidays and reunions regularly. My Memaw was famous for her rolls and always made them for every gathering. Now that she is gone my mom makes the rolls and they are always a reminder of my wonderful Memaw and the love of cooking she shared with all of us.
My cooking triumphs
I grew up at my mom and my Memaw's side learning to cook. One year when I was about 13, I spent 2 weeks with my Papaw (to take care of him, lol) while Memaw was away. One day while he was out in the fields baling hay I made a layered chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Oh, it looked so beautiful and it was my first attempt at baking by myself. Papaw raved about how good the cake was and how nice it looked. I do not remember if it was any good but, it really didn't matter. My Papaw's reaction instilled in me the confidence that I could master anything.
My cooking tragedies
That same year while I was tending to my Papaw I made hot water cornbread for the 1st time. A staple in our family. My Memaw, mom and Aunt Marie have always been the top hot water cornbread makers, in my opinion, in our family. Well, where Memaw's hot water cornbread was perfectly uniform, crisp on the outside and perfect on the inside mine were thin and fried crisp. No worries, my Papaw said that was the way he liked his cornbread and he ate it that way at every meal for 2 weeks. He suggested I teach my Memaw how to make cornbread because he said, "her's are too thick and moist in the middle. I like them crisp and crackly." What a trooper!! Sure hope he didn't break his false teeth on those rocks!
