Deep Fried Happiness

Next Friday the LTH's will be hosting our 2nd Annual "Grease Pong" at a bluegrass festival we attend each year.  Grease Pong combines what we refer to as "Deep Fried Happiness" and Beer Pong; how great is that?!  In a nutshell, we host a beer pong tournament and the *entry fee* is something yummy to deep fry and share with others.  We use a turkey deep fryer and deep fry anything and everything.  Last year, the inaugural event was a last minute addition to the schedule (about 12 hours before it kicked off), so our deep fried fare was fairly common place.  This year, all bets are off!

(I'm inserting all sorts of disclaimers here now to head off the objections/preaching of nay-sayers:
1.  While there will be beer consumed during Beer Pong, we are no longer drunken stupid college students and it's not the focal point of the day/game.  We do enjoy beer responsibly and no one is driving/operating heavy machinery/in charge of small children/hunting w/Dick Cheney.  We even offer DD's (designated drinkers, in this case) for non-drinkers to participate in the tourney.
2.  Believe it or not, we are all at healthy weights and (most of us) even sport fairly advanced fitness levels.  We indulge in this delectable deep fried fare in MODERATION.  We don't eat like this every day.
3.  We are all (sadly now, very much so) of legal drinking age.)

Now that that's out of the way, I asked the fabulous AR users who make use of the Recipe Exchange (seriously, if you are here on AR and read the blogs and use the site and haven't checked out the RE yet, you don't know what you're missing.  Well, obviously you don't know what you're missing if you haven't been there, because you haven't been there so you don't know.) to help me come up with some outside the box foods to deep fry.  They didn't let me down!

I took all of their suggestions into consideration and, after weeding out the pedestrian and labor intensive (have I ever mentioned I am, in fact, LAZY?), here's the list of deep fried foods the LTH's will be contributing to Grease Pong '09:  (I admit, some of these aren't included for their novelty, as much as per my personal tastes.  This is one of the perks of making the list and buying/prepping the food.)

*CUPCAKES!  I mean, really, that's a no brainer w/me, isn't it?  I love that they are FROSTED before you batter/fry them.  Can't wait for these!
*Bite sized Snickers
*Oreos
*Pickles (one of my personal favorites!)
*Hush Puppies (hopefully, like Long John Silvers!)
*Fresh Mozzarella and assorted cheeses
*BACON!
*Green Beans (this makes the *meal* healthy, right?)
*Jalapeno
*Spinach
*Cookie Dough

What do YOU think?  What's missing?  Have you tried any of these calorie laden diet busters?  Which one would YOU like to try?

What fried food make YOU happy...

Hello from Scotland, I see you have deep fried Snickers, but in Scotland it is mars bars that are deep fried. I have never tried them but am told they are delicous. Deep fried brie is another favourite here. Hope you have a great day. Norma (Grandmanorm)

Honestly I don't know how I would feel if it were me. Part of me would be so looking forward to "live and let live", the other part would be standing by with a jumbo container of Tums. That said, I would try something like cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon.....because I could. :} Have fun LTH, I can't wait to hear the recap of this one.

Aug. 5, 2009 11:31 am
how about deep fried jalapeno poppers? looks like you may have been headed in that direction anyway, right?

Aug. 5, 2009 11:31 am
cr@p, should've read the comments before I posted, sorry Avon! you were first!

Ice cream? I know I've seen it somewhere - scoops of ice cream, frozen solid, dipped in batter and flash-fried. Cold on the inside, hot and crunchy on the outside! has to be eaten right away though! I had deep-fried spinach as a garnish at a restaurant once - could have eaten a whole PLATTER of it!! YUM! Could probably use kale too - I've made the Kale Chips here (baked) and they were yummy too!

Aug. 5, 2009 3:56 pm
I still say wings and onion rings.. :)

Aug. 5, 2009 4:08 pm
My fiance tried a deep fried white castle burger at the So. Cal. Orange County fair last year. I'm not sure he loved it but it was interesting:)

Aug. 5, 2009 9:47 pm
LTH, my next venture is to try to replicate the jalapeno stuffed shrimp from a local restaurant. Unfortunately I don't have a recipe. I have to invent one. I can just say they involve shrimp, jalapeno peppers, cream cheese, and batter. Delicious!

I saw something on TV about deep fried hamburgers in oil that that has been strained, preserved and re-used for over 90 years! OMG I could feel my arteries hardening but would love to try one! I'd also like to do a deep fried cheesecake. Can't wait to read the recap blog on this adventure! Hope your fried fest is glorious!

Aug. 6, 2009 3:17 pm
I definitely agree with the deep fried cheesecake! I would cut it up into bite sized pieces so you can just pop one right in and enjoy!

Aug. 6, 2009 7:23 pm
That sounds fun! I had a deep fried cheesecake recently that was SOOO good!

We do this every summer too ... a deep fry fest with a keg! My favorites are wedged fresh tomatoes from the garden breaded in italian breadcrumbs and breaded dill pickles ... both are delish when deep fried!

Twinkies! I didn't see Twinkies on the list. One of the best things about Las Vegas!

You can't have a deep fry party without SPAM either sliced or cut into sticks , battered then deepfried. will go well with the beer

Aug. 7, 2009 5:10 pm
I would try the snickers bar! cheesecake sounds really good too!

Aug. 7, 2009 5:50 pm
Okay..I have had the fried twinkies in Las Vegas and the fried oreos and both are extremely yummy! There they top them with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles.

I've heard of deep fried Coke, but I'm not sure how they do it. They have it at the Texas State Fair every year. I love the chicken fried bacon!

Aug. 7, 2009 7:49 pm
corn dogs and ice cream :)

Aug. 7, 2009 7:56 pm
When I was in college, the cafeteria served deep fried corn nuggets. The inside was cream corn (maybe frozen?) and the outside was battered and crispy. So wonderful... and the line was always out the door when they served this!

Aug. 7, 2009 9:56 pm
One time I had a deep fried banana at an Indigo Joe's and it was pretty good. But I stink at deep frying... So sad.

I've also never heard of deep frying a snickers bar but deep-fried Mars bars are absolutely heavenly. They are amazing! To give you another idea....I saw on a cooking show once...deep-fried hamburger. Now that would be something I would love to try.

Aug. 8, 2009 4:56 am
Should the ravioli be frozen or thawed when I deep fry it?

Mac and cheese!

Aug. 8, 2009 8:10 am
I almost forgot... corn on the cob! one of my favorites!

Aug. 8, 2009 10:14 am
Deep fried pizza...battered or unbattered you cannot go wrong! Just make sure the slices are good and cold before you plunk!

Aug. 8, 2009 10:14 am
Sadly, I have tried everything on your list except the cupcakes, spinach, bacon and cookie dough. Loved everything but the pickles. Definately need the macaroni and cheese, and corn nuggets not to forget funnel cakes. When and where, count me in.

wow---only deep-fried food I like (yeah, upsets tummy---and deep-fried rolaids would make me, um, p u k e) is a KILLER ONION RING. Call me pedestrian, but I'd drive 100 miles for just 2 perfect rings. They also have deep-fried avocadoes on a stick at the CA state fair. How about mini Monte Cristo sammys? Like the others, would love to be there just for the experience! Pls. let us know how it goes. Pics would be grand as well!

Aug. 8, 2009 5:49 pm
Somethings missing from the list...deep fried cauliflower! My daughter likes the deep fried Oreos.

Aug. 8, 2009 6:02 pm
Don't drink and fry, saw a nasty accident once and no it was no deep fried beer! More like deep fried Ed.On a lighter note, wow! What a hoot! Sounds awesome and I would try every single one of them some more than once for sure! Have a blast! I'll add deep fried brownies, plopped on top of some vanilla ice cream! MMMM.

Aug. 8, 2009 8:10 pm
Deep fried avacado! It is so yummy! coat slices in a beer batter and go to town. My Dh just suggested marshmellows but i dont know how youd coat that :) Mmm......I want to come over!

Aug. 8, 2009 8:23 pm
Most Navy submarine cooks I know always deep fry bacon to save time and space. Deep fried battered cheese sandwiches are a treat. Make sure the batter coats the sandwich well or it can become a real grease ball.

Aug. 8, 2009 8:32 pm
I second the deep fried avocados... so delicious! But.. pickles??? I can't imagine!!

Aug. 8, 2009 8:51 pm
okay, so food network magazine had this recipe for deep fried chocolate covered strawberries dipped in waffle batter. that's like all the food groups and all my favorite foods in one! (oh, and btw, i was sucked into your blog because i was laughing so hard about you mocking-ambi pic. well done :)

Banana Fritters. Make thin pancake batter, use ripe banana sections, dipped, fried, dustd with powdered sugar, serve with ice cream or whipped cream. A favorite in my family. Easy & Enjoy!

I´m so sad that I read this until now :( I would still like to know how it turned out. In fact, this festival reminds me of a cartoon episode (I think it´s ren and stimpy- I watched it maybe 13 years ago the last time) where some kids were deep frying everything and this old man had to eat it. And I remember they sang a song ¨hey hey billy can you deep fry his shirt?¨ haha, it was great. Anyway, hope you had a great time.

deep fried ice cream - the best! Take scoops of ice cream and fresh thin cut white bread (Arnold sandwich loaf seems to work the best). Mold the bread around the ice cream - kind of like you are making a snowball and deep fry quickly until the bread is golden brown. Fabulous!

Deep fried oreos and any candybar that you can think of are very popular here in Milton, FL where I live. Two other deep fried favorites of everyone in my family (even my picky - nonvegetable-eating 4 yr old) is deepfried cauliflower and fried squash. There's also the classic fried green tomatoes. All three a great with Ranch dressing!

Aug. 9, 2009 11:31 am
How about deep fried bacon-wrapped mac and cheese? I haven't tried it, but saw the recipe from a TV chef and it looked incredibly decadent and indulgent. Definitely one of those "rare occasion" dishes, but one to remember. Someone please check it out and let us know!

Deep fried pickles are preety good. However wings and fresh clams are tops. Beer pong? I can never hang with my 22+ years age kids. Are there divisions based on age? Also I would be More worried about Ted Kennedy driving your daughter home across a bridge than any hunter.

Aug. 9, 2009 4:31 pm
I got another one for you, its because its all I am craving. Deep fried green olives. LOL

Aug. 9, 2009 5:07 pm

"Deep fried happiness" ... sounds like an intro to a story about the Iowa State Fair - best of luck with your shin-dig, LTH! Anything I could've possibly recommended has already been mentioned :)

Aug. 10, 2009 12:03 am
Just had the deep fried Oreo's at a restaurant, they were amazing with pancake batter and dusted with powdered sugar. Reese's cups would be my first choice to deep fry if I were to try at home.

I've had deep fried sushi at a Japanese restaurant in tempura batter, it was fantastic. and don't forget to deep fry some fruit things, those are good too. Sounds fun, have a blast!

At our state fair, we have deep fried Pepsi. I think they use the actual Pepsi syrup.

Aug. 10, 2009 7:28 am
I agree about hanging with those 20 something kids. Takes a lot of stamina. I would include that Texas favorite Shiner Bock with some deep fried jalapeno poppers. My favorite and a great combo.

Aug. 10, 2009 7:43 am
Wow what a lot of great blogs, I didn't see, but skipped over some, how about deep fried zuchini and have you ever tried the zuchini flower they are great and light. Not to mention mushrooms, and brocoli, mmmm mmmm good

Aug. 10, 2009 7:46 am
Girl, you have started a "fried storm"! I'm on the verge of a heart attack. However, if you need napkins, paper plates, etc. I'll be glad to supply them!!! Might as well go happy.

Aug. 10, 2009 8:32 am
This all just sounds WONDERFUL!!!! I'm starving!

Aug. 10, 2009 9:56 am
I have to agree with the twinkie recommendation. I love deep fried twinkies. They have the crispy batter shell but the inside is gooey and creamy. It tastes a million times better than a plain twinkie (which, by the way, I am not a big fan of)

Aug. 10, 2009 10:40 am
Has anyone mentioned fried almonds....mmm...with alittle cinnamon sugar. I guess any nut would work. I love all veggies fried, but somehow cant come to grips to taste the sweet stuff, oreo, twinkie, snickers etc. Sad but true yes! Just thought of a fried cinnabon, maybe I would go for that! LOL!

Aug. 10, 2009 11:14 am
LTH, I don't know if you already have a hushpuppy recipe picked out, but you should cruise on over to GR and check out Keni's hushpuppy recipe. My kids and I all think they are BETTER than Long John Silvers'!!

Aug. 10, 2009 11:21 am
Okay...umm is it bad that I have only had french fries, mozzerella sticks and chicken strips/nuggetst that have been deep fat fried?! Oh wait, I did try a burrito once...didn't care for it. I can't believe all the stuff that people suggested! Maybe Allrecipes should have a section just for fried food? LOL

Aug. 11, 2009 6:15 am
I don't know if this has been said because I didn't read through all the comments, but you could make Frenchees. It's the deep fried form of a grilled cheese.

Aug. 11, 2009 6:15 am
Deviled eggs also...we had them for Easter and it's FABULOUS.

Aug. 13, 2009 7:02 am
We had the deep fried Oreos and they were WONDERFUL! They were dipped in a waffle batter. Four of us shared a plate of 4 - it was plenty.

My favorite things to cook
I like to cook pretty much everything. I need more parameters to identify "favorite things"...am I *starving*, is it a weeknight, what ingredients do I have, am i looking for unique presentation, etc....?
My cooking triumphs
This varies from day to day. I get excited about every new *keeper* I find. And taking pics (though admittedly not very good ones) of food. It makes me happy to serve people food that makes them happy. It also makes me happy to eat aforementioned food (unless it has black pepper. Or celery. Or bananas. Or oranges. Or olives. Or cilantro. Or....
My cooking tragedies
Peanut Butter Cake II from this website. Do no, repeat: do not, attempt to put under-baked cakes back in the oven. On a wire rack. And fondant. Fondant is not for everyone. And I don't like people w/videos on You Tube that make it look so easy. EDIT: Since *discovering* MMF (Marshmallow Fondant-there's an excellent recipe here on AR), I'm no longer afraid of fondant, nor is it a tragedy! Rolled Buttercream Fondant, still a tragedy, for ME...
