Discrimination on AR?! ;)

Yesterday, I was searching for a new chocolate chip cookie recipe.  I like to regularly try new chocolate chip cookie recipes (cause there are a bazillion out there AND I like to stock our freezer w/cookie dough balls so they're already ready when I want to make my CCCD cupcakes).   In my search, I came across a number of recipes w/the word "best" in the title.  I read quite a few reviews for quite a few different recipes and what stuck in my mind was at least 1 reviewer (or more...though, I guess I don't need to add that since it's insinuated w/the "at least") chose to base their rating on the TITLE rather than the actual recipe.

UGH!  I'm not sure why that bothers me so much, but it does.  I feel like writing a disclaimer at the top of all recipes w/"best" in the title:  "When you make and rate this recipe, please pretend the word "best" is not found in the title".  Obviously, "best" is subjective...some of you weirdos out there :) may not agree with me that Felix K's 'Don't Even Try To Say These Aren't The Best Cookies You've Ever Eaten Cause You Know They Are' Cookies are the BEST (along WITH Half & Half's, of course) chocolate chip cookie on AR.  However, unless you rate every single other recipe using the same criteria (if it's not THE BEST dip or THE BEST potato you've ever made), please don't discriminate against "THE BEST" recipes simply because of their titles.

It's hard enough being THE BEST, w/out having to deal with ratings discrimination, too....

Good for you LTH!..I feel the same way. I don't care what the title is, if I like it or don't is how I rate a recipe.

Is you finding it hard at the top LTH?!!! I agree with you btw!!

LOL! I was just surprised at how every *best* recipe I looked at commented on (and seemed to adjust accordingly) the title in their rating...I just wonder if their ratings would be the same if they made the same recipe w/a different title...

I think that putting "The Best" is just setting it up to fail since like you said so many have different opionions on what they think is best!.. I like a firmer, thicker cookie like "Beth's Chocolate Chip" and my kids like them more soft and gooey like "Toll House".. To each of us there are different "Best"!.. Good point made Lovetohost!..

Highly over-rated and over-used word which is entirely subjective! I agree...rate based on what the recipe actually IS....

Teehee! I read your review on that cookie....I like to taste salt in my cc cookies too...I thought I was the only strange one!

So by the reasoning given above about the word *Best* which draws soo many people to try the recipe and then rate it down cos its not in fact the best, would using the word *Worst* have the same opposite effect? Methinks it would sit on AR shelves for eternity bearing those 4 words "Yet to be reviewed" !! Cos lets face it who is going to try a recipe claiming to be the *Worst* such and such of all time!!

LOL Trishie! Somehow, though, we have come to expect "the Best." I hear it from my kids and the neices kids. They have to have the best bike, phone, car, cake, whatever...never realizing that somethings just are great as they are, but no better than others.

Have you tried the "Best, Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie" recipe, LTH? My daughter made a batch of those a week ago and they were pretty darned good. I'm not a CCC connoisseur though - the only recipe I've ever used is Toll House.

I have tried those, Deborah B, and I did like them, but not as much as "felix b's" and "half and halfs"!

Well said and I couldn't agree more! CindyLepp, welcome to my world where salt "enhances" food, not poisons it!

Hey LTH, maybe we should make our own "BEST" list. You know, the kind that's tried and true, not just because somebody says it is but because we KNOW it is!

My favorite things to cook
I like to cook pretty much everything. I need more parameters to identify "favorite things"...am I *starving*, is it a weeknight, what ingredients do I have, am i looking for unique presentation, etc....?
My cooking triumphs
This varies from day to day. I get excited about every new *keeper* I find. And taking pics (though admittedly not very good ones) of food. It makes me happy to serve people food that makes them happy. It also makes me happy to eat aforementioned food (unless it has black pepper. Or celery. Or bananas. Or oranges. Or olives. Or cilantro. Or....
My cooking tragedies
Peanut Butter Cake II from this website. Do no, repeat: do not, attempt to put under-baked cakes back in the oven. On a wire rack. And fondant. Fondant is not for everyone. And I don't like people w/videos on You Tube that make it look so easy. EDIT: Since *discovering* MMF (Marshmallow Fondant-there's an excellent recipe here on AR), I'm no longer afraid of fondant, nor is it a tragedy! Rolled Buttercream Fondant, still a tragedy, for ME...
