Someone told me that the simple fact of gardening is that things want to grow.

That person was correct.

I cannot believe how successful our first garden has proven to be thus far. If anything, it's been too successful. We haven't been too good about actually harvesting some of the herbs in a timely manner. The cilantro was sincerely ridiculous.

I say "was" because we finally took the opportunity to cut it down to size over the weekend in preparing some meals for family in from out of town.

Along with a good amount of the purple basil you see in the photos, we used pretty much all the cilantro in making two of the best dishes in my repertoire: Pad Thai and Thai Garlic Chile Noodle. Both dishes finish with a good helping of chopped cilantro and sweet basil. I think it's why I like them as much as I do.

It's been a remarkably sunny spring and summer here in Seattle, which I am sure is a huge contributor to the general success of the garden (and the super brown grass). I'm still holding out hope for the peppers as there seem to be some signs of life on those plants. The tomatoes seemed to suddenly just appear from nowhere, but have been cautioned that the real challenge for tomatoes around here is for them to actually ripen. Since fresh tomatoes were a huge motivator in starting the garden, that makes me a little nervous, but I shall have faith.

Okay, I'm actually a pragmatist and, hence, don't really do the 'faith' think properly, but you get the general concept.

More to come as we actually start cooking a little more frequently from our backyard produce aisle.

Howdy Ump! Just yesterday I was thinking about you and wondering how your garden was doing. You haven't posted a blog in a long while. The garden looks great! Rest assured, the tomatoes will ripen. I'm a few hours south of you and my tomatoes are wildly crazy right about now. Nothing 'red' yet, but the blush is coming and once that starts, we're off and rolling. Plenty of summer, and plenty of heat still to come which is just what the tomatoes like. Typically in the northwest, they don't really get going until mid-August, so I would say you are right on track and even ahead of schedule. The basil looks terrific. The grass....who really cares? It's in its dormant stage right now and costs too much to keep pouring water on it. It'll be green again in no time.

I'm admittedly happy with the grass. No point in mowing it when it doesn't grow. Low maintenance is fine by me! Thank you for the confidence booster on the tomatoes. I'm not seeing any blush on them or anything, but, as said by the Hold Steady, 'you gotta stay positive.'

Hey Mister - Thanks for the garden update. Don't sweat the 'matoes. It's going to be hot in Seattle for the next few days so you'll probably see them blushing up soon. Mine just started showing some color, and yours are probably getting more sunning space than mine are. (Stupid in-house gardener with her amateurish ways.) Love the dog photo.

I love to garden and this year my garden is growing well. So are the weeds. Thanks for posting my fellow Washingtonian.

Please come get your weather from NY and send ours along home! We will have few tomatoes this year since all the rain has literally flooded farms and gardens. Our lawns are looking lush though. Enjoy your garden and its produce.

About Me
I'm a native Michigander who has landed in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not hating the 40 degree low temperatures in winter, to be sure, especially when reading about the snowstorms back home. I've also lived in Atlanta, Denver, Madison, and Germany. I have restaurant experience working in Asian cuisine and American barbeque. I just enjoy the rhythm of prepping and cooking in the kitchen with a little music to keep me company. The bonus is when your guests truly enjoy the results of all the work.
My favorite things to cook
I really love Asian food. I prefer to have the one dish with a good mix of veggies and meat in a delicious sauce. It's quite a change from my meat-and-potatoes upbringing.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The maternal side of my family are of Czech descent, so it's those meals at Grandma's house that I love and miss. I feel the need to learn more about Czech cuisine so I can continue those traditions if and when I have a family.
My cooking triumphs
I'd say that making a Thai Chili Pepper Chicken dish for a gal early in our relationship has led to her sticking with me for a while now. Learn to cook you single fellas. It helps!
My cooking tragedies
I added cayenne pepper to a hot pan the other day, which resulted in much coughing and hacking for about ten minutes for both my gal and I. It was really ridiculous. I should know better, but I basically mace-d the household!
