Slow Cooker Beef Stew I

this was a good basic stew recipe. great on its own or used as a foundation for getting creative! try adding sweet potatoes and chopped oranges for a great fall spin on a classic.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
these were the tastiest pancakes i've ever had! by the time you add maple syrup on top they taste just like pumpkin pie. as other reviewers have suggested to NOT think the batter, i tried it exactly as is. i was very skeptical because it was so thick but as long as you let them cook for a decent time on each side, they turn out nice and fat and fluffy. i'd say if you're going to thin the batter do it very minimally. excellent recipe ruth - thanks!

Applesauce Bars

only thing i changed was the size of the pan. used a 9x9 and ended up with a wonderfully moist and fluffy spice cake. it certainly has enough spices... anymore and it would be overkill. i'd say it's pretty near perfect if you're looking for a nice light spice cake. eat it plain for calorie/fat awareness or ice it with a great cream cheese frosting or the broiler icing recipe on this site!

Broiler Icing

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2009
i grew up with this icing and was so excited to find it here! my mom always put this on top of date cake. it actually seal in the moisture of the cake and creates a nice crunchy topping. make sure you brown it till it's good and golden, otherwise it won't caramelize and just ends up gooey. i just put it on an applesauce cake and it's terrific. can be made with either white or brown sugar and you can use milk instead of cream.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2009
wow - i really don't understand how one recipe can result in so many different results! most reviewers who gave a lower rating complained that the cookies flattened too much. this is usually from using too much butter in a recipe or not enough flour. i found that this recipe had so much flour that i had to use my hands just to mix it all in. good thing is that the more flour you pack in a cookie, the softer it will turn out. problem was that these did not flatten out AT ALL. it was very crumbly to shape into balls (takes a whole afternoon if you double the recipe!) and came out of the oven as balls. second batch in oven i flattened completely with the bottom of a glass. problem with that is that they are not that incredibly tasty... a mild spice and just kind of there. because i doubled the recipe and have a ton of dough and kids anxious to have good cookies for the weekend, i will ice these babies with a brown sugar icing or an orange icing. that should salvage them enough. i just can't believe this recipe gets a full five stars when 1600 people have tried it! i can only assume that these people have not ever tried REALLY good cookies LOL.

Sour Cream Pork Chops

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2009
all i can say is wow! this was incredible. i mixed in a tablespoon of garlic salt and a tablespoon of paprika to my flour mixture. as many other reviewers, i didn't realize this was a crockpot recipe until it was too late. i seared them in the pan and then baked in oven at 400 for 30min exactly as you would make for the crock pot. i then took the juices, added about 1/4c of flour that was left from dredging (with spices mixed in) and used that to thicken the juices on the stove. this made plenty of sauce to serve over the chops and egg noodles. my family devoured this... it was incredibly flavourful.

Blonde Brownies I

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2009
these were very tasty but had a bit of a cakey/cookie texture rather than a dense chewy brownie. i mixed in the choco chips and that helped... i think i'll try again and mix in that same amount of butterscotch chips in addition to the choco. i realize that will make them very rich, but isn't that what a brownie is supposed to be?! it will also add some more chewy texture.

Easy Granola Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2009
last week i tried the "playgroup" granola bars and they were a big disappointment. i was hesitant to try another homemade bar but the condensed milk made me a little more confident because i love it! i'm so glad i tried these!! i used 2.5c oatmeal and 1c crushed special K for added crunch. i actually used the berry one and crushed up the berries... sooo good. added 1/2c dark choc chunks, chopped almonds, craisins and a small bit of grapenuts for extra fiber. these don't taste healthy at all!! low fat condensed milk and very little butter make these far more wholesome than the bars i buy and way cheaper. i did bake them the full 25min cause i wanted them crunchy but they are a little too hard to bite! probably the 20 minutes would be perfect.

Playgroup Granola Bars

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2009
i'm sorry - i just don't get the hype. i was totally trusting that these would be amazing because of the ratings. maybe my taste standards are just higher than others. i baked these until they were brown on the edges and they are soft, dry and just plain hard to swallow. flavor is great but i have to dunk them in my tea just to swallow them, they are that dry. i even followed advise and subbed 1/2c applesauce for 1/4c of the oil. also added 1/4c peanut butter in addition to the 1/4c oil. seemed like it should have turned out. used almonds and chocolate chips. going to try the "easy granola bars" recipe next time. i guess even when a recipe is so highly rated, it's still all relative to what those rating it consider to be yummy!

Soft Sugar Cookies IV

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
these were rather tasty! i definitely enjoy my sour cream soft cookie recipe better. i made these as a rolled cookie to do valentine cut-outs. with a little extra flour on the board, the consistency was fine but they just weren't quite as tasty as my regular ones. they also were chewier right through.

Seven Minute Frosting I

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
tried recipe exactly as is. was great for about 30 minutes. after which it got that awful crystal consistency that everyone talks about. i did not have the cream of tartar that is suggested by others and imagine this may help. but as the recipe is written, 3 stars is generous. sorry. possibly re-writing it with some tweaking to rid of the crystalization.

Mini Sour Cream Biscuits

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
these came out so buttery and moist! definitely not a "flaky" biscuit because the sour cream makes them very moist - almost a muffin sort of consistency. i only had pancake mix so mine had a definite sweet flavor. my family devoured these. this recipe made 8 mini muffins... filled mini muffin cups to top so that they'd have a nice muffin top to them!

Bagel and Cheese Bake

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2009
this was delicious! hubby doesn't like onions so i just left them out and put in extra bacon but i'm sure it would totally round out the flavor. i sliced the bagels in thin rounds so that they'd be easy to layer and pressed it down so that the egg mixture covered all the bagel. this is important so that it doesn't dry out. very tasty brunch dish! serve with fresh pineapple and strawberries to kick it up a notch!

Grandma's Polish Perogies

can't in all honesty give this 5 stars simply because i only used the dough recipe - have my favourite filling (potato, cheddar & cheese whiz). the dough was wonderful! so easy to work with and very tender. brought these for christmas gathering and my ukranian family thought they were absolutely amazing!

Holiday Ribbon Gelatin

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2009
this was definitely a hit. the kids loved the looks and the adults loved the taste! everyone had their preferences... daughter prefers to not have any pineapple chunks in the middle layer. i prefer to double the middle layer because it's what makes this more than just jello. experiment with different flavors for different times of the year... can't really go wrong.

Whole Wheat and Honey Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2009
if your main concern is finding something healthy to use as a pizza crust, this is a great option. if you want something that tastes anything like pizza crust... not really the recipe for you. this is very tasty and yeasty but has a definite bread-like texture and flavor. the more you let it rise, the breadier it will be. if you bake it immediately without any rising, it will be more like a basic pizza crust... although, without any rising, this will only cover one cookie sheet.
