The first food I learned to cook was cornbread. I was 7 years old and my mother is a southern-raised woman. I still make cornbread and even the kids love it. Both of my parents worked as I was growing up, so when I sunk my claws into cooking, I quickly became the primary chef for the family.
My favorite things to cook
I grew up and fell in love with spinach. It is probably one of the most perfect foods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Sausage cake at Christmas.
Cabbage, black-eyed peas, and rice at New Years.
Old family spaghetti sauce recipe that freezes and makes enough for a lasagna later.
My cooking triumphs
When I was seventeen and my responsibility was making dinner, I tried to make a different meal each night and see how long it would take me to run out of ideas. My family ate well for two months without being served the same thing twice.
My cooking tragedies
I have a wonderful family recipe for spaghetti sauce. It has been handed down and perfected over generations. The boys in my family (husband and stepson) are picky eaters and don't like it. I am having to alter my cooking to suit their tastes.
