About this Cook
I'm married with 3 kids and I truly enjoy cooking. I really love to try out new recipes and am constantly searching for new ways to present old standbys.
My favorite things to cook
The three dishes that everyone asks for: Potato salad for every barbeque; cornbread dressing every Thanksgiving; homemade tamales at Christmas.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up having tamales and bueneulos every Christmas and although I never perfected the buenuelo, I think I do pretty well with the tamales.
My cooking triumphs
My extended family usually gathers at my house for most of the holidays and just having everyone happy and full at the end of the day is a triumph in itself!
My cooking tragedies
I used to watch my grandmother and mother make homemade tortillas and they always came out perfectly round and just the right thickness. The first time I tried it, my tortillas took on the shape of the state of Texas and were so thick the masa (dough) didn't cook all the way through.

Lisa's Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake
I made this cake for a family gathering (along with a strawberry cake from this website). Although I made a few changes to lighten up the recipe (replacing the oil with sugar free applesauce and using fat-free sour cream), the taste and texture of the final product were outstanding. All the chocolate lovers raved (and had no clue that I had made the substitutions!) I'll definitely be making this cake again and again.

Jesse and Steve's Fresh Strawberry Cake
I went looking for a strawberry cake for my husband's birthday and found this recipe. It looked easy and I liked the fact that it did not use gelatin or packaged cake mix. The only change I made to the recipe was to use chopped strawberries instead of mashed and making two 9" cakes instead of a sheet cake. It was a hit; several guests came back for seconds. The texture was great - dense but not too rich. And the taste of the lemon glaze was perfectly suited to the strawberry cake. My husband has declared this cake his new favorite. Thanks!
