About this Cook
My mom is a great cook and a fabulous baker. My grandma was even better, in that grandma way of "a pinch of this and a dash of that". I grew up baking with them both, and after a long break from really doing any cooking or baking, I am getting back into it again. I'm married now and we recently bought our first house and immediately remodeled the kitchen, so I really love spending time in it. When I'm in the kitchen cooking or especially when I am baking, I think of my Grandma and I feel like she is with me in those moments. I think (hope) she is proud that I am carrying on the trditions she started.
My favorite things to cook
I really love to bake. I think I like cakes the best, and want to get better about decorating them. I also want to try fancier desserts with more emphasis on the presentation. I finally learned how to make pie crust, and am trying to perfect my method.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We are Portuguese on my mom's side and every Christmas we would make Portuguese sweet bread wreaths for friends and neighbors. My Grandma also made sweet bread at Easter.
My cooking triumphs
My mom handed over a german chocolate cake recipe that is amazing (it's my dad's favorite cake)yet for some reason it doesn't turn out for her at all. I have never had a problem with it, and it turns out marvelously. I recently made some and sent her a piece. She said it was so good that she hid it in the fridge so nobody else would eat it, and she made it last for 3 or 4 days all to herself.
My cooking tragedies
Making a cheesecake that doesn't crack in the middle! I have to work on the waterbath method so that my cake doesn't get all wet... a work in progress!

Italian Cream Cake II
The flavor was really good, but it came out a little dry, almost too dense. However, I had a little trouble with the egg whites and didn't fold them in very well. I will definitely make it again and give it a second chance. I cooked the pecans up in a skillet before adding them so they would get a nuttier, toasty flavor. I also toasted some leftover coconut and sprinkled them both on top of the cake and it looked and tasted really good.

Southwestern Lasagna
Not that this recipe needs another rave review, but I made it for a dinner party and everyone went crazy for it. It was easy to make, and could be done ahead of time which is always great for entertaining. Served with spanish rice, it was the perfect meal.

Frosted Banana Bars
These are sooo good! I added a handful of chocolate chips, and used a peanut butter glaze, but really, I think it would have been better without the glaze. The suggestion of sprinkling peanut butter chocolate chips on top, or even mixed in, sounds like it would be perfect. I'll try it that way next time, because there will be many more 'next times' with this recipe!
