About this Cook
I currently an a graduate student in NYC. I am a cook for 2, me and my boyfriend. We're "adventurous" with our taste, but I wouldn't say we're too far out there. I am always looking for good recipes, with inexpensive ingredients. I absolutely LOVE the ingredient search- it is a great tool to save money for me, because it allows me to use things that are just sitting around in the pantry.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook and eat London Broil. Any recipe with cheese usually goes over well! I always try to have a meat, a starch, and a veggie served at dinner. My family fishes quite a bit, and my favorite time of the year is Mackeral season! Fresh fish straight from the Gulf caught by yourself is a wonderful dinner.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well, I come from a line of Italian cooks, who all have their own "secret sauce recipe!" I love my grandpa's spaghetti sauce that incorporates chopped clams. I always give my mom a call when I don't have an ingredient on hand, or if something goes wrong... I can follow a recipe to a T, but she is great at helping my improvise or fix mistakes. My boyfriend has recently persuaded me to switch to using butter, not margarine on everything, since he believes its healthier. I use it sparingly!
My cooking triumphs
Everytime I make something on here that I really enjoy. I have also made a recipe box with everything I have made so far. To look at it is to relive my accomplishments as a cook! I hope to become a more proficient baker. I love bakery items, I just need more practice in how to make them turn out so other people like my baked goods!
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make grandpa's sauce one time, and didn't stir the pot enough. It ended up smoking up my entire apartment, and burnt tomato sauce to the bottom of the pot. The whole batch to feed 10 people was ruined! Another time, I was trying to fry in a pot with oil on my stovetop. I didn't know how hot the oil really was... until it sparked with fire! I had to put it out, and evacuate my apartment for an hour because the smoke alarms were going off, and the black smoke filled every room :(

Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Soup
If you have any doubt, CHECK IT AT THE DOOR, and make this soup because it is amazing!!! If using Patti's suggestion of Bill Echol's Seasoning mix, you have to make about 1.5x the stated recipe to yield 1.25oz as called for by recipe. I used beer, nothing bitter about it. I also added about 2C chicken broth, only bc I wanted a thinner soup, not a thicker chili consistency. Of course I added more of the base ing. like paprika, salt, etc. but I recommend tasting it at the 5 hour shredding mark to see how to adjust to fit your tastes. My only wish* would be for the chicken to be flavored somehow prior to adding it in the mix. Maybe as leftovers it will absorb more of the flavor of the soup, but as is it tastes like excellent soup with really moist boiled/shredded chicken tossed in. Still the best soup I've had in awhile though!!!!

Italian Spaghetti Sauce with Meatballs
Just made the sauce, and it was alright. There needs to be some step that makes the sauce less chunky. However, sauces are HIGHLY subjective, and I am Italian, so what I rate a 3, you may love. I suggest trying as many recipes as possible to see what your preference is!

Steak Tips with Mushroom Sauce
Wow- I love this sauce! I had a really awful cut of meat, but the sauce was so good I licked my plate, a new low! lol I used green onions v shallots, white caps v portabellas, and cornstarch v flour. I held back some beef broth to whisk the flour in before adding to the sauce to prevent clumps. A must!!!!!
