I'm a metropolitan redneck. I grew up (first 9 years) in Oklahoma but spent 20 years in Dallas where I was born. I have three brothers and we are all big eaters, and love country style cooking ie. not healthy. Real butter, whole milk, bacon, eggs and stove drippings kind of country. I learned to cook by standing behind my mom for 18 years shouting "Is it ready yet? Ewww don't put ungyuns in it. I HATE ungyuns!" As a result, I view recipes as guidelines. And I don't know how to cook small meals, which sucks because I am single again ;)
My favorite things to cook
Large pieces of meat. Preferably the whole animal. But I AM trying to stay within military weight standards, so I'm beginning to substitute some of the artery clogging ingredients. I love Italian and Mexican. Also have recently acquired a taste for Japanese, having spent four years on the USS Kitty Hawk out of Yokosuka. Also enjoy brewing my own tasty beverages to drink with my on-the-fly creations.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Telling the kids to stay out from under my feet when I'm in the kitchen (Most used cooking term for 3 generations). Looking over relatives' shoulders to learn the "recipe" for their special dishes. Creating delicious comfort foods for the most special people in my life.
My cooking triumphs
I had a girl friend in Japan that thought "Frito pie" was food from the gods!
My cooking tragedies
A 10lb brisket CAUGHT ON FIRE right before it was time to take it off the grill. I just called it "Cajun" and everybody was good with that.
