I love cooking, especially when I find new recipes and new ingredients!
My favorite family cooking traditions
One of my favorite has to be my Grandpa's pork tenderloin, which we had every Christmas. It's incredible. It's actually roasted in a deliciously yummy sauce made in part from ketchup! Love it.
My cooking triumphs
I think my best triumph was cooking a Thanksgiving dinner by myself for the first time. I managed a twelve pound turkey, and when I say "managed" I really mean it. I used the Joy of Cooking "turning" method to make a perfectly cooked turkey (well done thighs, moist breast meat) and turning a 12 pounder every forty minutes, four times, is quite a challenge! The turkey turned out fabulously, if I may say. My husband redeclared his wedding vows on the spot. Happiness prevailed!
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make my own Korma chicken, using a few ideas from other recipes, and what I thought were the usual spices for Korma chicken. I wanted to make the meal big enough to last my husband and I for another four or five meals, so I used about ten or twelve chicken breasts!! I piled them all into a baking dish with the rest of the ingredients, and baked it for the recommended time. When it was done, it didn't smell too great. But I served it to my husband anyway. It was terrible!! The spices were all wrong. It tasted as if you were sucking on a whole nutmeg. The worst part was that I had used SO much chicken; it was a huge waste! But actually, I was able to salvage the chicken (scraping off as much of the horrible "korma" as possible) and used it in another dish that I knew could somewhat overcome the previous cooking! At least it was not an entire loss...
