Awesome Korean Steak

Reviewed: Jul. 10, 2008
Made it even without the shallots or sesame seeds and it turned out great. Just used regular thick slices of steak, but sliced them thinly. Added some slices of mushrooms, and they tasted good in the sauce as well.

Good Old Fashioned Pancakes

Simple and easy. I threw in an extra tbsp of vanilla extract. I'm giving an extra star because I'm assuming this recipe is better when followed exactly. Halfway into making these I realized I had no egg, so I substituted a 2tbsp water + 2tbsp cornstarch mixture to make up for the egg (a vegan substitute, from what I hear).

Banana Cream Pie I

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2008
Great pie! Tasted awesome and garnished many compliments. Used the "Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust" recipe from this site. Did like other reviewers suggested and used a mix of Cornstarch & Flour instead of just flour. Topped it off with a coconut whipped cream and toasted coconut flakes. Also, alternated layering bananas and the cream mixture. Waited till I was about to serve before covering with the whipped cream and toasted coconut like another reviewer suggested. Coconut Whipped Cream: Whip 1 cup Heavy Whipping Cream till soft peaks form, add 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp coconut extract, and whip until thicker. Flaked Coconut: Preheat oven to 325* degrees. Spread coconut flakes out on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes.

Chicken Milano

Great recipe. Doubled the sauce and used a bit of olive oil and some white wine on top of the butter/chicken broth. I didn't have sun dried tomatoes on hand, so I used mushrooms and asparagus and it still turned out very nicely. Used a bit of flour to try and thicken the sauce and served over spaghetti.

Used Orange Honey instead of adding in orange zest and it turned out just great! Probably not as orange-y in flavor, but still yummy.

Souvlaki

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2008
Delicious. Served with Tzatziki sauce from this site along with some rice. Didn't have a grill, so instead I cooked in the oven at 325-350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. The sauce/juices that seep to the bottom of the pan make the bottom a bit soft and fatty, so I wiped off the skewers and put them on a non-stick grille pan on high heat for just a couple minutes to sear the bottom nice and crisp. Turned out great, but I'm sure an actual grill would've done this recipe more justice. Perhaps even a grate/grill surface placed over the baking pan (so the juices could seep down and away from the skewers), would've been better. Regardless, it still turned out fantastic. Halved the recipe, and instead of a second green bell pepper I used whitecap mushrooms (large onces) sliced in half so that they were nice and thick.

Best Ever Pie Crust

Does the job, but ended up very flaky and wasn't able to retain any shapes. (I had cut out leaves and wiped them in egg wash). Application of eggwash basically made it all fall apart in the oven.

Chantal's New York Cheesecake

Great recipe. Made sure that the cream cheese was at room temperature and was careful to not over beat. Cooked it bain marie style at 350* for one hour and left it until morning to cool. It looked a bit custard-y so I baked it at 325* for another half hour and proceeded to let it cool to firm it up. No cracks. Covered it in a chocolate ganache from this site like another user, and it turned out looking professional!

Skillet Lamb Chops

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2008
I tried this recipe out because I happened to have lamb at the time and because I had all the ingredients on hand. Lots of other lamb recipes on this site seem to call for fresh herbs, specifically rosemary and thyme, and since I didn't have those this was perfect. For the most part I followed the recipe, except I added salt, pepper, and dried oregano directly to the chops as well. I also rubbed in a 1/2 tsp of fresh minced garlic on the chops. I also browned about 1 tsp of fresh diced onion and 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic in the oil along with the meat. The sauce I prepared as instructed. As suggested by another reviewer, I checked mine about 15 minutes in and they were already cooked to about medium. Simple, easy, and delicious. Be careful not to overuse the lemon, as it may overpower the taste of the lamb-- Which comes through nicely here in both the broth and the meat.

Bacon Wrapped Smokies

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2008
This recipe is simple and makes a great treat for parties! I took the suggestion of another reviewer and used center cut bacon, but had the strips cut in halves instead of thirds. Even though the bacon could stay on without toothpicks, I used them anyways for the sake of serving. The one thing about these is that I was worried at first that I was putting on too much sugar-- But the more the better! If the sugar is ontop of the smokies (rather than 'around' them) they turn the bacon nice, bubbly and crispy! Definitely looking for another event to make these at!
