My favorite family cooking traditions
None, really, except that everyone loves my corn casserole so I bring it to Thanksgiving every year.
My cooking triumphs
That I learned to to cook at all is a marvel. My mother was/is an awful cook. Turns out I'm pretty darned good at it.
My cooking tragedies
Diet foods make you fat. I'm 42, and in great shape. A little fat makes you feel satiated so you don't eat as much. And it tastes better to boot.
Never get complacent. Always try something new.
Taste every spice by itself.
Sugar goes with salt.
Too sweet? Add vinegar. Too acidic? Add sugar.
Cut vegetables in big pieces.
Don't overcook vegetables.
If it takes longer than 20 minutes to prepare, it probably isn't worth it.
