I am a young wife and mom of a 2 year old boy. I love baking ever since I was young. My mother was never a baker. So when I was like 15 I started baking on my own, and I was hooked. When I got married, I was 20, and only knew the basics of cooking. I am proud to say I have taught myself to cook and I recently took the challenge of making the turkey for this 08 Thanksgiving.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook Mexican and Italian food. I am Mexican and the flavors and great dishes our country has are amazing. I'm slowly learning how to make tamales, pozole, and the bigger dishes. Another favorite: Baking! I make cakes and decorate them also. I recently made my first wedding cake, and it was a double wedding, 2 cakes. One day I will have my diner/bakery!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother always makes buñuelos for Christmas. They are like a sweet thin tortilla, that is fried and covered in a delicious syrup. A very traditional dessert in Mexico. Even though, I don't know how to make them (YET!), I recently helped her make tamales, and I am happy to now be part of her tradition of holiday cooking. I just wish my food will taste as good as hers ;)!
My cooking triumphs
Making 2 wedding cakes this past september. I was tired, nervous, excited, but most importantly, proud of the job I did!
My cooking tragedies
When I was dating my husband, I was maybe 16 or 17, I decided to make a chocolate cake for him. The recipe called for whipped topping between the 4 layer cake. Well, I did not thaw enough my whip. topping, so I vigorously started beating it with a spatula. So I finished my cake. It looked good for about a minute. Then started sliding. My cake started falling apart! I beat the whip. topping so much it basically melted. The cake was still good, but we just had to hold it up with our hands!!! lol
