I'm married to Bruce, a police sergeant, prior Marine and all around handy man, He can do anything!! I have one daughter, Laura, and one grandson, Matthew. We have dogs, cats, horses and cattle. I come from a German/English/Scotch farming background. I've travelled a lot but only live 2 miles from the house I was born in on the same road.
My favorite things to cook
Chicken!! It's my favorite food group, even better than chocolate! I like breads, cakes and desserts. Luckily my husband is not a sweets eater so I don't make dessert unless we're having company or taking meals to my daughter's family or my in-laws.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother was from the south and a very large family, 16 children. So I cook a lot like she did. I started cooking when I was 9 years old. She was a very basic cook, get it on the table and feed everyone. I've added Italian and Mexican dishes. I like to try new easy meals.
My cooking triumphs
When I asked my husband what the best thing was I cooked his answer was "you never fix anything that isn't good". Maybe he likes me! I grew up on the farm and we had meat for every meal. He really likes my gravy. So did my Dad. Needing to stretch food dollars, we made Hamburger Gravy when I was young. It's still a favorite.
My cooking tragedies
For a family gathering, I cooked a potato casserole that my daughter usually makes, she was at a meeting and wasn't going to be home until after the meal. So I cooked it, put it under the broiler, "just like she said" and proceeded to fill the whole house with smoke. As she was coming up the road on her way home, the black smoke was rolling out of the house and my son-in-law thought I'd caught the house on fire. It's been a couple of years ago and we still laugh about it.
