About this Cook
Looooooove to cook since I was 7 and my mother gave me my first cookbook. Worked in restaurants, catered, ghost wrote a cookbook, "Lilies of the Kitchen," and have studied with some heavyweights--Michael Field, Barbara Batcheller, Wolfgang Puck. But best of all is sweating over the pots and pans and learning even to "hear" the ingredients cook, as well as see and smell.
My favorite things to cook
Pasta, seafood, ethnic--Moroccan, Indian, Thai, Mediterranean--the world gets smaller around a table of beautiful, shared food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My southern roots and the world's cuisine.
My cooking triumphs
Nailing a rack of lamb, a souffle, ganache, making cheese from yogurt. Best of all was having an friend from Puri, India tell me I cooked like his favorite aunt. Wow.
My cooking tragedies
The worst...trying to turn leftover Italian into fresh Mexican...egad!

Mexican Chicken Corn Chowder
A really good basic chowder, but just a shade under perfect--hence the 4 stars. I've made it twice now, and had to adjust twice. I'm not a fan of bouillon cubes as they taste rather manufactured. So I used chicken broth (packaged is fine) instead--2 cups. I also upped the garlic to about 4 minced cloves. I browned the chicken and then set it aside to add later so it wouldn't overcook. Substituted 4 scraped ears of fresh corn (cuisine arted the corn to a cream). Doubled the onion, 1 tsp. cumin plus some about a tsp. dried oregano. Used cream, added at the end. Put the grated jack into the soup at the last and used liberal chopped cilantro, fresh chopped oregano, and minced green onions to garnish. It was outstanding!. Even a friend, who is Mexican, gave it 5 stars. Served it with chips and salsa; and a cheese/jalepeno bread. The gang went wild!

Quinoa and Black Beans
All my favorite ingredients! And now a favorite recipe! My husband and I loved it. Yes, I did change a couple of ingredients...used half the amount of cayenne and, following the advice of other reviewers, used only one can of black beans. This recipe feeds 4, though, as an entree, even if you use the second can of beans.

New York Style Pizza
Nice pizza. Simple and delicious. I used only drained and chopped organic tomatoes as I don't like the typical pizza sauce. A solid four star...probably could be a five with a thinner dough.
