Strengths and Weaknesses

Saturday was quite a busy day. I had to leave the house before noon and with my girls' dance class in the morning, I had little time for anything. Sunday was my dad's 60th birthday party and I was in charge of, among other things, a pasta salad. The salad called for zucchini, among other things, and I had planned on going to the grocery store to pick some up on Sunday morning.

Mrs. LB called me while I was working and said she was on her way to the grocery store. I e-mailed her a quick list of stuff, and added zucchini among red onions, ground mustard and a few other assorted items.

About 10 minutes later, my phone rang again.

Mrs. LB: "So I'm looking for the ground mustard. Is it the same as dry mustard?"

LB: "Yeah, that's probably the same thing. As long as it's a spice, powdered, sure."

I went back to doing my work. About two minutes later, my phone rang again.

Mrs. LB: "They don't have any zucchini here. I've been up and down the aisle and nothing. Wait, is it Italian squash?"

LB: "Yes."

Mrs. LB (irritated): "Well then why didn't you list it as Italian squash instead of having me look around for zucchini?"

Click.

I sighed.

Much later, Mrs. LB told me how difficult it was to go grocery shopping with the girls. As she was recounting a not-so-scary story about how she had to constantly rein the girls in, I tried to remember when the last time I went grocery shopping without the girls. I may have gone to Costco once without them in July but the last time I went grocery shopping by myself was towards the end of the school year, probably in May.

That's why I do the grocery shopping. It's just easier all around if I do it.

I'm guessing I'm not the only AR member whose loving spouse is less-than-helpful with the grocery shopping.

Of course, long ago I was relieved of my laundry duties. Whenever I try, which isn't that often, I tend to leave clothes in the dryer or put them away in the wrong drawers.

To wit, the botched attempts leave Mrs. LB saying one thing:

"That's why I do the laundry."

LOL, Mrs. LB sounds just like my husband at the grocery store. I prefer to go myself because he always buys the wrong stuff.

LB as the household shopper whom, only does her own laundry (not trusting dh with silk, etc) the only advice I can offer is shut-up before you end up eating Kraft au gratin a few times a week.

LOL! LB you are NOT the only AR member whose loving spouse is less than helpful with grocery shopping! IF I call my hubby rto BRING something home when HE IS PASSING the store he retort is "We can do without it!!" REGARDLESS of what it is!!! IF I manage to get him to the SUPERMARKET he walks off ahead of me WITH the cart and I end up carrying armfuls of groceries around looking for him, usually to be found in the potato chip/candy aisle!!!

The last time my husband went to the grocery store alone was the day we brought our baby daughter home from the hospital...he bought a loaf of bread, gallon of milk and two boxes of fish sticks. :) I definitely prefer to do the grocery shopping! And he prefers to do his laundry (I supposedly shrink his clothes...) so in the end, it all evens out. Sort of. ;)

Well at least she did get what you needed. my DH hasn't been in a grocery store in years & I do the laundry, also! Count your blessings! LOL! Any muffin making going on? Isn't this heat wave awful? I am thankful we are BBQ'ing sosme chicken tonight & I have the potatoe salad, carrot-raisin salad & some jell-o all done & in the fridge-there should be enough for 2 or 3 days, so I don't have to cook for awhile-Yay!

Ah yes, the wonderful heat. I can't wait until it's not hot anymore, but that won't be until November :( Yeah, I've been making some muffins, every Saturday. Made some Chocolate Chocolate Chip muffins on Saturday. Might do zucchini muffins this Saturday.

About Me
My mom was a master chef... okay, she was a stay-at-home mom but her food was magnificent and nothing will ever top that for me. But I got so used to her cooking that when I branched out on my own I knew how to make nothing. It's taken me quite some time to realize that I love to cook and to create edible dishes. I've been married for nine-plus years and have just recently dived head-first into cooking. So far, so good! And if you need any tips (not that I'd have much to offer) you can e-mail me at lbueno99 at hotmail dot com.
My favorite things to cook
Around September or October of 2007, I had little interest in cooking and baking. This has since changed. Literally overnight I became interested in making my own food and my wife's been loving life ever since. I'd like to say that I've grown a liking to trying new things but almost everything I cook is new to me. I like to try chicken recipes and add ingredients I either have never tasted (sun-dried tomatoes) or have rarely used before (balsamic vinegar). And I owe it all to allrecipes.com!
My favorite family cooking traditions
After I got settled into cooking/baking, I wanted to start a new family tradition. It seemed strange to just up and start one but all traditions have a starting point, right? So in August of 2008, I decided that I wanted to build Saturday mornings around muffins. I wanted to start a tradition of making muffins every Saturday mornings so my girls (then 4 and 2) would grow up with thoughts of warm homemade muffins every Saturday instead of cartoons and/or cinnamon rolls. With the help and support of the wonderful cooks on All Recipes, I forged the new tradition and have made muffins every Saturday without fail since the final weekend of August '08. My favorite muffins... well, there have been many successes and will be many more triumphs in the months and years to follow so you'll just have to keep up with all the good and the bad on my All Recipes blog.
My cooking triumphs
Christmas 2007! We had my parents, three brothers (two of whom brought girlfriends) over for a Christmas breakfast. My wife and I prepared dilligently. We made a sausage skillet and Farmer's Casserole for our dual main dishes, had bacon, rolls and Sarah's Applesauce on the side, had standard hot chocolate and Hot Spiced Cider for drinks and Downeast Maine Pumpkin Bread, Raspberry Crumb Cake, Molasses Sugar Cookies and regular sugar cookies with Decorator Frosting for desserts and everything went fast! All the items in CAPS we got from right here at allrecipes.com.
My cooking tragedies
Let's hope this is the worst of it, but I tried to make pepperoni bread from here on this site and I botched it. The dough kicked my butt. shame too because it looked so good. And then more recently, I forgot to put milk in some French toast I was trying to make. That was a disaster.
